Avascular Necrosis
Does anyone have any experience with this condition? Fatty deposits (from liver?) settle in the joints, restricting blood flow. The joint (usually hip) is damaged and often has to be replaced.
It can occur from injury, or use of steroids, but has also been linked to alcoholism. I consumed 6 cocktails (3 x 3oz. whiskey) a night for 5 years (give or take) before I recently quit. I have no gauge as to where that puts me.
Statistically, it's a pretty rare condition (there are 10,000 to 20,000 cases a year, and say 50% can be attributed to factors other than alcoholism.)
Has anyone ever discussed this with their physician?
Thanks

Talking to your doctor about having quit drinking is not a bad thing to do!

Thanks all...
No, it's not happening to me. (knock on wood) But a friend of mine who was a recovering alcoholic had his hip replaced at 39.
It just gets you thinking.....
All of the information I can find is pretty vague. It must be pretty rare. Given the amount of chronic drinking that goes on in this country, you would guess it would be happening more often.
I'll get to my doc one of these days and lay out the whole situation for him.
Thanks!

No. Everything is better in my life without drinking. No worries about getting home, no worries about work the next day...and I feel like a million bucks.
I don't like sticking out like a sore thumb when I go out with my friends, but a club soda with lime or virgin mary helps me blend in nicely.
My life is simple and good!

One word of caution....please smell your non alcoholic drink
before drinking it. It's really easy for a bartender or server
to mix up an order.
Glad to know you are doing well.....

my sister was diagnosed with this condition when she was 12 or 13 years old. she was very skinny and of course did not drink alcohol, she was having pain when walking or on long walks, she was diagnosed at the mao clinic with exploratory surgery. they told her she would probably have to get her hip replaced someday. i don't think there was any treatment for it. I never heard it had anything to do with the liver? i thought it was about the cartiledge in the hip but not sure. she was later paralyzed so it became a non issue as she wasn't able to walk. that is all i ever knew, as far as i know nothing to do with alcoholism or liver but like they say, talk to a dr or look in medical books. take care
