Questiin about rehab medicine.

I have been to rehab before and i was given a drug there called librium, so i am at the point where i go through withdrawals after work. I usually drink around 8 beers after work from around 8 to 10.My question is if i go see a doctor would he prescribe me that medicine or can it only be given to detox patients.

That's a great question and, as always, it depends on the doc. While I was living in Austin, I was very upfront with my doc about my drinking problem. He would prescribe Librium when I needed it.

My doc in Atlanta is the complete opposite. She won't touch the subject of addiction. But she referred me to an addiction specialist that did prescribe Xanax to enable me to detox from home.

The other angle is to to see a psychiatrist about anxiety and panic attacks. They will usually prescribe a benzodiazepine (the drug family that Librium and Xanaz belong to) that you can use to detox. I've done that before too.

The benzos are just as addictive as the alcohol, so make sure you ask for only a week's worth of medicine so you don't trade one addiction for another. That is very common.

I wish you great luck.

Plese ask your doctor for advice..

No SR member is qualified to make suggestions
about medicine or dosage.
There are too many variables involved to know
what is safest and best for you.

I used no drugs for my de tox but that has
no bearing on what you may require.

Welcome to SR.....

My experience is that it depends on the doctor. I had one doctor that would prescribe me anything I wanted. I seemed to like that doc . My other doctor would never prescribe me benzos for withdrawal. Her advice was go to the ER.
