memory loss......your experience.

I suffer from short to mid term memory loss.

Most days it is manageable with the help of a pad and pen if I'm at work.

It can get difficult at times with names and stuff i need to remember while I'm out in the truck.

If i ring in to the office for instruction on a problem...i can remember the first sentence......the rest is lost within five minutes.....i normally ring back to confirm the latter of the instruction.

It can at times get embarrassing with names.....normally i need to meet the guy 20 times before i retain the info.

After some years it has not improved and i guess it will never improve.
In fact at times it seems to be getting worse.

I saw the doctor some years ago......long term alcohol abuse..blah..blah.

I wondered if any of you had experienced it..........did it improve

And do you do or did anything to improve it..

Your experience would be appreciated.......trucker.

My memory has improved immensely since I quit drinking. It is kinda tiresome because people keep repeating things that I have already heard before.
It was OK when I was drinking because I wouldn't remember so the story was fresh.
As far as names are concerned I always had a problem. I was an on the road salesman so this was a huge handicap.
A simple method I employed was to try to equate the person's name with a feature of someone famous and that usually helped.

*sigh*
I quit drinking at 52...never had a memory problem
if you don't count alcoholic blackouts.

Now...at 73... short term memory is slideing away
specifically with names so far.

I've been covering it up
by calling people Honey...
obviously not possible in all situations....

I have no answers..Sorry it's happening to you...

I'm sure age is a factor, when I was teaching I complained to my doctor about short term memory loss, he gave me something for it, I'll look it up and pm you because I sure cant remember the name now...it started with a p.
What I did was write down everything I could remember that happened in my classes every day, so that when I went back to class I could pick up where I left off...it didnt always work, but usually. I don't think that can apply to your job tho...
Oh! it was piracetam (the french name for the molecule, I hope that can help)

thanks interesting..piracetam........ill do some research......i see that it is fairly common to prescribe this to alcoholics...

Its probably as much age (42) as past abuses...

Ill also report back progress from calling other truckers "honey"...lol.

Many thanks........trucker

My memory is suffering also. My job is on the road and alot of public speaking so it's tough to have memory problems. I'm just taking it one day at a time and doing my best not to say uuuhhhh alot when I speak.. If I can't remember a name or something I'll usually just pass it off and come back to it later. I also keep a pen and paper handy for quick notes. My memory issues didn't show up till about 3 weeks in.

Yep, a memory problem here too. However, it seems everyone I know has memory problems. But mine is getting better as the haze lifts.

I stell have blank spots, long term due to black outs and short term sometimes.

The frustrating part is there are times now where I think it is getting better and then the same names I remembered yesterday I can not remember today!

I think it is getting somewhat better, but I would not swear to it. My last 5 years of drinking my evenings were but a blur!

BTW being southern the embarrasement is not as bad with the ladies, I am 55 so I can get away with calling a lady hon and not be insulting! LOL

trucker,I have had those buggers too.Mine has slowly improved a little.
My second sponsor had a good talk with me about mental exercises.
They help improve the brains functions. They won`t cure everything, but they can help a little.Right now,I will gladly settle for a little.I am almost late for a meeting, hopefully tomorrow,i can post a little more on what he did.

I'm just beginning to notice memory loss after nearly two weeks of sobriety. It's dumb things I can't remember, I can really relate to walking into a room and forgetting what I went in there for... I just hope it gets better in time. I didn't have this problem when I was actively drinking hopefully it is a sign of the brain trying to get back to normal after all the abuse I gave it!

my sponsor would read the dictionary, really,he would about anything he could get.He also listened to different things to help open his mind.He finally got a electronic gadget one day.It was a thesaurus(sp). He used it a lot.
He studied all kinds of stuff to broaden his mind.

Have always had problems with this. Aging doesn't help. Not drinking hasn't helped so far, it's probably just age, for me, anyway.
