Going from HARD alcohol to LESS HARD alcohol
I have a friend (no I really do) who is trying to stop drinking VODKA. He has switched to RUM which he says is not as hard on him, drinks less of because he doesn't like it as much, and the hangovers are a lot less severe.
He intends to casually drink that and lessen his "dose" over time until he doesn't drink any more.
Any chance that might happen? I dunno....Has anyone else tried this?
Thanks in advance!

Hmmmm. Since rum generally has the same alcohol content as vodka I would say that it is the same thing.
Moderating has worked for some people so who knows.
If he wakes up with a hangover he probably drank too much the night before.
Anyways welocome and I hope your friend has luck with that.
If not there is plenty of support here for people that are recovering from drinking and other substances.

yeah I tried switching from whiskey to wine, no luck. I drank my whiskey with cola, so I decoded to switch to whiskey and water.
LOL. Only alcoholics decide to do these kinds of things.
I finally came to the conclusion that I could not drink at all. Period. That's a decision that not all alcoholics come to.

I laughed to myself when I read the title of this thread (no offense).
Alcohol is alcohol is alcohol. That's what it boils down to.
Any CHANCE? Sure, I guess there's a chance of just about anything happening. But if he's rationalizing what he drinks and how much he drinks by switching from vodka to rum to make himself feel better? His chances are very slim, IMO.
Good luck to your friend.

I tried many times to moderate - never could do it and always ended up drinking whatever I had and often getting more. No, moderation won't work for me but if it works for someone else, more power to them.
Does anyone actually like vodka? lol
I used it as a fast and relatively cheap way to get wasted and because you can't really taste it if you add enough mixer.
I didn't find rum easy to drink as it is so strongly flavoured but I am sure I would have gotten used to it if I had to.
I don't like to generalise (much lol) but I just don't see how changing one drink for another (of equal strength) is going to do anything for your friend.
In fact the very idea of needing to change the type of alcohol you drink to retain control is a massive warning sign.

Here are some of the methods we have tried: Drinking beer only, limiting the number of drinks never drinking alone, never drinking in the morning, drinking only at home, never having it in the house, never drinking during business hours, drinking only at parties, switching from scotch to brandy, drinking only natural wines , agreeing to resign if ever drunk on the job taking a trip, not taking a trip , swearing off forever ,taking more physical exercise, reading inspirational books, going to health farms and sanitariums, accepting voluntary commitment to asylums

Well...
According to the U.S. Center for Disease Control
when talking about beer -wine-liquor
Sooo...the key to health is to not drink at all.
Alcohol is a toxic liquid. For everyone.

Your body and mind processes all 3 toxins equally
so drinking only wine or only liquor or only beer
or mixing them is of no importance.
They all do the same damage.

Has anyone else tried this you ask? It's been tried so many times that it has secured a spot in the book on Pg 31. That was 70 years ago. Can you imagine how many times it's been tried since then?
I tried them all..just like the book describes (though I don't recall a brandy phase).
No more gin
No more whiskey
No more rum (sugar content was obviously causing the hangovers)
Wine only - really, the amount of red wine I would consume had some "undesireable" side affects
Beer only - beer stopped working, I honestly could not drink enough of it at one point to get the effect I wanted
Then - vodka (you know, no one will smell it, no hangovers...lol)
Switching and switching again just confounded me more and more...but once I get liqour in me, I want more - no matter what form it comes in.

Done the hard stuff, Vodka and, for a little while, absinthe, and, yes, I came off of it and no longer drink it because of the effect it has. I only drink beer, wine and the occasional brandy. But even that I'm kicking because it still feels better to be sober!!
Now THATs some heavy rationalization! whew..
Guess I did it backwards. Drank so much rum, I figured Vodka (we have all heard the “it’s distilled.. or.. it doesn’t cause hangovers.. or THE BEST YET.. “ you can’t smell it!” hahaha) would be better. So I switched, landed in the ER with an over fatal limit BAC a week later. The things we make ourselves believe is astounding.

Yeah, it's the story of my life.
(or at least the last few decades of it)
