Why not? That is their job.
In my area manning the hotline phones is a cherished service position.
Call them Forever, the person answering the phone is a recovering alcoholic, they volunteer to man the phones because they want to make sure that the hand of AA is always there to help an alcoholic in need.
They want you to call! If I was manning the phone I would be excited you called or any other alcoholic seeking help.
will they really want to talk to someone this late? They have lives too, they dont want to be interuppret.
Call them, trust me they want you to call.

Holy crap, call them for Pete's sake!
Volunteering for 12th step work is part of the deal. That's how we help ourselves, by helping others.
If they didn't want to do it, they would not have volunteered.

ForeverDecember is also sharing part of her journey
in Newcomers and on our Alcoholism 12 Step Forum.
She certainly needs our support and understanding.
We all can relate to how difficult it is to quit.
Just start again FD...you too can win!

I have volunteered for the phones. I signed up to talk on the phone in the middle of the night. Trust me, I was hoping someone would call that I could offer an ear to! There is not a better feeling than giving back in AA to someone that needs you! :ghug3
How are you going to help the hot line person if you don't call him/her???
Yeah, that person on the other line needs your call to help them stay sober also. You may tell them something they need to hear that day. Just because that person has 5, 10, 20, or more years of soberiety taking the phone calls doesent mean that what you tell them doesent help them also.
Alcoholics helping other alcoholics, that's one of the essential tools that help keep us sober.
That person on the other line can very well be the one that starts a whole new enjoyable way of life for you.
Do it!!!!

I don't think they care what time you call so long as you call. They volunteer for hours that they can talk on the phone without a problem, so they've planned for these late calls. Just think--the hotline guy/gal could be just sitting there, up all night, with nothing but a cup of coffee to keep him/her company, waiting for you to call. At least that's how I pictured him/her when I made my call at about 3 a.m. He was wide awake, glad to hear from me, and was my very first contact in NA. The start of a beautiful journey. I never found out who he was...God Bless him, whoever he was, wherever he is. One day I want to be that person for someone.

From what I know, the hotlines are staffed by people who WANT to be there. And by helping you stay sober and sane, they are doing the same for themselves. Please call a hotline when you feel that down. That's what it's there for.
