campral or Naltrexone?
Hi, im new here
i want to know wich one works best?
I have a bit of a driking problem
but is only like once a week or every 15 days
i want to quit that horrible craving
i will like to know wich of these is best to tell my doctor
i want some experiences and advice

Mar13 everyone is different, what works for one person may not work for the other.
Talk to your doc, be totally honest with the doc about how much you drink and for how long, I mentioned both of those and antabuse when I saw my doctor about my drinking.
With me he told me he would prescribe which ever I wished, but he would be wasting his time and mine, he told me I needed to detox to get sober first and then go from there.
See the doc, be honest, listen to the doc, and go from there.

I've been on both. I found Revia (naltrextone) worked better. However, the work is still with you. I drank on both. Yes, the Revia really helped with the cravings. but the habit/coping without drinking was another thing. While on the Revia, I did find that I didn't want to drink more, I didn't get that carefree feeling like before. I actually felt sick on more then a few occassions, but because I was in the habit I kept drinking. It felt odd to me to not drink in social settings. It won't stop you from getting drunk. To me, it is a great tool, but you need to learn to cope without alcohol. Change the habits/behaviors/patterns

Prescription drugs will help you through de-tox, and others may reduce cravings. But, I am not a firm believer in ingesting something to help with a problem that involves ingesting something.
We have tried every imaginable remedy. In some instances there has been brief recovery, followed always by a still worse relapse. Physicians who are familiar with alcoholism agree there is no such thing a making a normal drinker out of an alcoholic. Science may one day accomplish this, but it hasn't done so yet.

I hope it goes well for you. I've found that the revia included in a support network with active counselling is helping. I was recommended that a holistic approach is taken and anything that helps has got to be worth trying in my book. :0)

i just came from the doctor and said im not alcoholic
and dont need it !
but i feel i do need to drink and get drunk once in a while
im a social drinker she said

Look only you can tell if you are an alcoholic, a doctor rarely pronounces some one alcoholic unless they are quit advanced in the disease, IE they have crossed the invisible line and have to drink to maintain normalcy or they drink so much they wind up with alcoholic poisoning. Maybe cirrosis or the liver!

It is best to look up the meds and check out side effects etc...Then you are better prepared with specific questions to pose to your doctor...Remember we are all different and complex...what works for one may not work for someone else..
Just because he is a doctor does not mean the doctor is God..With so many changes in health care it is important to be your own advocate.. once a med is agreed on between you and your doctor..For us with our addictions-- it is important to be very aware of how we react..If it truiggers old stuff --be sure to share that with your doctor.
Hoping and wishing the best for you.
