Isn't that only two possible reasons? Think about it.

But, seriously, I can think of at least two other reasons why I was unhappy, at times. Don't know about you.

But, those things didn't drive me to drink. Guess I did something right.

Happiness is subjective. Am I happy? Happier? or Happiest?

Grateful is what I try and be and let the people around me be "happy" that I am if nothing else, not drunk as I interact with them. If AA has given me anything it has given me the ability to laugh at myself and you know what? THAT MAKES ME HAPPY.

I must be doing something right.

Jon

Many times I've thought, when someone says these sorts of things at meeting, that they don't seem to have the very thing they are talking about.

Do you know what I mean? Sometimes they seem to be the one's pounding the table talking about Serenity at the top of their voice.

Maybe it's just a style thing. Some people are sort of like televangelists but about AA.

I found the statement particularly interesting because the fellow who said it is a soft-spoken, kind, old man who rarely says things that could be decisive. He also has 44 years of sobriety.

I'd change "happy" to peace of mind. Happiness is a transitory feeling that comes and goes but having a quiet mind is the big gift of sobriety for this alcoholic. I'm pretty miserable because of the heat and high humidity right now but know it will pass. At the same time I'm not plagued by the constant inner torment that was the norm while I drank.
