So I've been hanging out with some folks who have either entirely went sober, or have *really" cut back on their drinking. And every now and again, the conversation goes to what booze they absolutely would not trust themselves with.
Some people can drink wine & beer all day long, but are afraid of hard liquor. Others stick to the hard stuff and think wine "sneaks up on them." I was always been afraid of tequila since I've heard so many horror stories. Others will drink mixed drinks only. Doesn't make sense.
So how about you?? What were you afraid of?

Honestly, it makes me sad when I read people genuinely think that only one kind of booze is their downfall.
I learned alcohol is alcohol - there's nothing I can't drink to the point of self destruction.

I liked beer the most but had years where I only drank hard liquor. While I hated wine, there were times I got good and drunk off of it because that's all there was.
I CAN drink ANYTHING they all mess me up...

Switching favorite drinks was one of my many "moderation methods": one week I drank wine until I was drunk, so I'd switch to liquor and then drink that until I was drunk, then beer, and so on, and then I'd wonder why I couldn't moderate.
I think this concept is the very definition of "a distinction without difference."

Vodka brought out my infamous evil twin (she even had her own nickname.) 6 years ago I successfully swore it off (one of a trillion attempts to moderate) and switched to scotch, then whiskey, then rye/bourbon. Then booze pretty much stopped "working." Champagne made me black out, tequila made me the most reckless. Beer and wine gave me the worst hangovers. Bottom line- I was way too familiar with and did regrettable and embarrassing things under the influence of it ALL! Glad I'm sober!
Exactly what I was looking for! Beer, wine, I drank those to try and "reduce" my alcohol intake..it only led me back to vodka, or rum, or whiskey. Like Dee said, alcohol is alcohol and now I'm afraid of it all and hope to stay that way! BTW, there was a time I would never touch booze because I was afraid I would get to drunk..my how times can change.
In the end. It didn't matter what I drank. I never got drunk. I would only have blackouts. And then become almost sober-like. Only to wake up with the most horrifying hangovers that weren't even worth it because I couldn't even cop a buzz !
And damn, if I didn't die trying...

I can't drink alcohol.
Tried to be sophisticated with wine,
Tried to be chic with martinis,
Tried to moderate with beer,
Tried to cut back by alternating beer with n/a beer,
Finally just went the easy route and drank rye or vodka straight from the bottle as much as I wanted.
The only alcohol I really didn't like was rum, but someone gave me a bottle of rum as a gift once, and you bet I didn't let it go to waste.
I seemed to achieve the same desired effect no matter which liquor I drank. And in the end, that was a very bad effect indeed.
