Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

The more I pursue my own journey of recovery, which includes prolonged and hopefully lasting sobriety. The more it becomes apparent that whatever path or program you pursue, the most beneficial and successful are founded in what is now known as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). The value inn treating, initially, people with anxiety and depression has been extended, proved by Empirical success, to many other areas of human suffering e.g. addictions, PTSD etc.

The other thing that becomes apparent is that they are often, despite in their origins being historically and geographically some distance apart linked, proving the human condition never changes, allowing for certain obvious social factors.

Examples of which are perhaps the Dalai Lama saying,'Buddhism is not a religion. It is the science of the mind.'

The fact that the Fellowship of AA , whatever criticisms it faces, good bad or indifferent, exists as a support organisation for problem drinkers. Whilst the suggested 12 Step program of Recovery, is firmly rooted in changing your perception or 'way of thinking.' Which is at the heart of CBT.

It's also true to say that,'The Serenity Prayer' is , in its wording, strongly linked to Stoic philosophy which has its core values inn CBT also.

An example, all of which might be found in William Knauss , one of the pioneers of cognitive therapy, saying, 'What happened to you may not be your fault, but it is your responsibility.'

The message in this and everything else I've referred to being,'Change your thoughts (perception.) Change your life.' whatever your personal aims and goals are.

Which, in recovery, remembering that failure to do so, at least runs the risk of proving fatal, suggests that whatever program or path you choose should offer at the very least, a strong element of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.

If it doesn't not only is it failing itself, more importantly it's failing you!

' If you are distressed by anything external the pain is not due to the thing itself but your estimate of it, and that you have the power to evoke at any moment.' - Marcus Aurelius
