diet pills

Hi, this is kind of a tricky question. I am eating alot, anything to keep from drinking. (smoking cigs too) I was in the mall the other day and almost went in and bought some metabolife. But something stopped me, and I was wondering if people in AA think this is the softer, easier way. I kind of do, just confused. It's a drug, right? I have to stay far away from any kind of drug. And what about those energy pills, with ginseng and other junk in them? I guess anything natural would be ok. And what about those power drinks, I love the Snapple Fire, etc, but it has alot of stuff in it. Anything I like can turn into an addiction, the mind of an adict! GGGGGgrrrrrr

Hello Terry!

This is one of those things that is open to a lot of interpretation. I believe that in the spirit of recovery, it is thought best by most to not use addicting or mind altering drugs. Nobody says you can't take an aspirin.

And, you unfortunate thing, you have hit on one of my soapbox subjects. Okay to use anything natural? NOT! The most potent drugs we use are still just a substance synthesized from a natural one. Throughout history mankind has used herbal remedies, but there have been specialists almost always. One must be taught how to use herbs safely. To be sure... there's probably not going to be a problem if you want to cure your headache by chewing on willow bark (aspirin), as long you avoid the bird droppings. However, if you go out and make yourself a foxglove salad (digitalis)... it's been nice having you here. I know several people who have made themselves quite ill self dosing with herbs. For pete's sake I got sick drinking herbal TEA! (It was summer in KY.... I drank a lot of it.) If you decide to go the "natural" route without the help of a liscensed practitioner of holistic medicine... please read a LOT first.

Sorry... you hit the herb button.

Hugs,
Smoke

Dear Terry and Smoke,

How did you know I was having a problem with weight? There is a HP! I really got depressed over it this morning.

I weighed this moring and haven't lost a pound in the last week. I measure my hips and I have lost 3 inches, in total, in a month! Then I looked in the mirror. Gravity just hung it around my knees!

In my experience, I was always told, "Just follow the directions on the bottle." What is my motive to lose weight or alter my thinking?

Love you two,

Pickle

Hi Smoke,
Hi Pickle,
I guess I will just skip the metabolife thing. Smoke, I have heard that about herbs, they can make you sick, so I guess I'll leave that alone also. I know I am just substituting food instead of drinking, I'm just kind of out of control. I'm getting kind of hungry now, I think I'll go make me a foxglove salad......lol.

OH Terry
I'm ROFL.
I do believe you can get addicted to anything. I truly believe I was addicted to Thai food for a while. I would get really cranky if I didn't eat Thai at least once a week.

But, seriously, I have heard bad stuff about Metabolife . . .some guy here in Georgia died from it recently and it was on the news.

I think it's ok to take medication as needed, as directed. I know I am addicted to something when I feel that I am using it to cope with life, to make things better somehow. Does that make sense?

At one time I thought I was addicted to exercise, and that is one addiction I wish I could revive.

Good wishes to you Terry, I have been rreading a lot of your posts this afternoon.

Val

Val,
thanks for the post. I have given up on the metabolife, heard too many bad things, and yes, it is a drug. I am now addicted to peanut butter m&ms, newport cigs, bottled water, chinese food, internet, games, cyber buddies, and I am seriously considering an addiction to exercise. (this is one addiction I won't have any trouble with) Now if I could only get my lazy butt out of this chair.....write me anytime, 3 weeks sober here!!! no nothing but cigs and my whole family is a bunch of partiers. My new quote " You define your life and I'll define mine" Someone I know confessed to me yesterday about an addiction to ecstasy, it sounds so nice, I'm glad I have never tried it. (joke) Anyway, they said they are just smoking pot instead of the pills. I said, hey whatever works for you. Before I would of lectured and bitched about it.....Let go & Let God
Have a nice Memorial Weekend Everybody!

hey there Terri, i found your post very interesting and just had to reply. Notice how you say that you are addicted to cigarettes (quit that sh*t ASAP!), internet, chocolat, games, etc. You have to realize that ANYBODY can become addicted to ANYTHING. Rule of nature. If you like something, you will keep using it repeatidly. When it interfers with your daily life and you find yourself pushing away your daily routine for whatever it may be that you are addicted to, then it becomes a probe that you need to stop. Now come on, how could games and internet or stuff like that interfer with your usual buisness?? I don't know, only you can answer that.

Now this metabolite stuff has not been shown as an addictive substance by the FDA, but of coure neither has chocolate. This is because there has been no shown proof that subjects will go out of their way and spend large amounts of cash just to have...and not have withdrawls or habitual seeking patterns. It's all up to you pal, if you think that you may spend all the family bank money or what not on these "non-addictive" pills, than don't use them. It's all on you and only you, nobody else can tell you other wise. If we were talking cocaine or amphetamines then that is a different story because they have been proven to show that one can easily become dependent and go through withdrawls without...spend all the money they have just to have this drug.

Me, I drink Red Bull, Venom, and Amp energy drinks during my work hours to keep up. I buy one maybe two drinks a day but only on days that I work. I am not dependent, I do not spend all my money on these drinks. They also have not become a hassle in my daily life. So like I said, it all depends on the person.

Metabolite is an herbal drug that speeds up the metabolism...sickness may be a side effect. I don't know how much a bottle costs but do you really think this herbal remedy will ruin our life? There is no high in this drug. If you are overweight and eat too much I would say GO FOR IT. Being overweight is a terrible disorder that can bring about many fatal heart problems and these herbal drugs may be the safest alternative to other meds like amphetamines and other perscription diet drugs. There is always excercise and dieting which may be harder but if you don't want to take drugs than this may be your answer. The only true answer can come from you. Baing addicted to something that will not harm you in the long run is one thing and becoming dependent on something that will is something else. It is up to you.

I wish you good luck my friend,
JOEY

Hi Joey,
thanks for the good advice. I think the metabolife thing is different for women than men though. And I do know several women that would have to have it to work, also. It gives you "false" energy, that's why I think it would be dangerous for me cuz I can get hooked on anything. I also think women are also much more obsessed about their weight than men. Good luck, I have three weeks now. Hang in there, my big thing is alcohol, so I feel for ya!

Hi...I quit smoking in August and eating anything that is not nailed down. For me I hate the feeling of any drugs...I love the feeling of a clear head. If it makes me feel strange I get rid of it.

Herbs can be very dangerous...I do all my health through food enzymes and eating Vegan (aside fish)...and that has helped the weight without starving and also taking anything weird of chemical.

Diets and aids do not work maybe check out some good enzyme sites for health and healing, and then also some vegan sites. You will be amazed at the diversity in foods you can eat and yet not gain weight. Just a suggestion one I have found after years of battling the bulge works....

Thanks For Listening....
