controlled drinking
Is there a recovery program that focusses on controlled drinking rather than abstinance? I've heard that such an approach is popular in Europe and am curious as to whether this type of resource is available in the U.S. - Specifically in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Jeff, there is such a thing as controlled drinking and it is big in California. How successful it is I cannot say. I would suggest that you go www.aa.org and go on the forum of the grapevine and ask the question. you could probably find a place where you are located.
In the UK they have a programme run by ADAS the alcohol and drug advisory service

However as an alcoholic I lied to these people about the amount of drink I was consuming...
there are heavy drinkers and there are alcoholics which one are you??
It takes courage to admit that you are an alcoholic
You have to decide for yourself....
controlled drinking was not an option for me because once I started I could not stop until oblivion...
Good luck and hope you find what you are looking for

Controlled drinking is fine for those who can do it. But...not everyone who has an alcohol problem can do this. If you are an alcoholic, you will lose control again. You have to be real honest with yourself. I know that for me, I can't control it. Abstinence is the way for me to go. The AA big book advises people who are not sure that they are alcoholics to try some controlled drinking. If you try and fail, you'll find out.
