i am in unchartered waters please help
dear board, i have chronic pain for 7.5 years. have been on oxycotin for 4 years. i was doing fine with it, never abused it. it helped until i got a new pain/neurologist. she prescribed a very minute dose 1/10th of 1 mg of naltrexone everyday. after 3 weeks i had a serious reaction of shingle type pains, nausea, agitation extreme, confusion, pain etc. she told me to stop the naltrexone mini dose. i did on jan 1, 2008. but no matter what i do whenever i take my oxycotin no matter how little or how much i have the same reaction. the dr. freaked at first saying i am in unchartered waters. "there is no info on this etc." she never even told me it was an opiate blocker. she says she has been giving this for 2 years and it has helped the oxycotin work better. well it's messed me up big time and will not go away. now when i see her she just dismisses it, won't even listen. obviously paranoid for lawsuit which i have no way of proving and am not that kind of person. she's trying to act like i am nuts now. wants a psychological profile done. ridiculous! she acts like i can just tone down and get off the osy anytime i want. told me not to use suboxone or anything like it cause it is like the naltrexone. i am scared to death and do not know what to do. i was taking 40mg in the morning and afternoon and 30 mg twice a day of the fast acting oxy as well. the oxy does not work now but i am so addicted. keep hoping that the naltrexone problem goes away but it is not. her acting like i'm nuts scares me even more as maybe she knows something i don't. she never warned me about it being a opiate blocker or that this was undocumented. can anyone help???? thanks for reading this. It sounds to me like either the doctor was lying to you about why she gave naltrexone, or she was running some mad scientist experiment on you. Naltrexone is an opioid antagonist, it has a stronger affinity to your receptors than oxy or other opiates, yet it does not trigger them and as such does not produce a 'high.' Basically what this means is it is a blocker, like you said. If your receptors are filled with this, other opiates wont bind and as a result you cant get high. Maybe she was trying to reduce your tolerance, maybe she wanted to see if this would precipitate withdrawl and test how addicted you are. I dont know, im not a doctor. While suboxone does have naloxone or naltrexone in it, it is far from the same thing. Suboxone is a partial opioid agonist, it has a stronger affinity to your receptors than most agonists and it produces semi agonistic (high) effects. But there is also subutex, which has no antagonist (naltrexone) in it. There are other options out there, and i highly reccomend you see a new doctor and get a second opinion. Good luck.

oh and again im not a doctor, but the severe reaction you described sounds like withdrawl was precipitated, which would be an expected result from someone addicted to pain killers. Go get a second opinion, save your records, and explain to the new doc all that the old one did. If he seems shocked, you might want to consider reporting your old doc.

since i stopped taking the min-dose of 1/10th of 1mg of naltrexone 3.5 weeks ago. does anyone know how long it would be before it would stop blocking the oxycodone opiate that i have to take? does the fact that i am continuing to take the oxycodone make the naltrexone more implanted on my receptors? ho hum just wondering while i am FREAKIN.
Ge ur records off that idiot and see someone new. Giving you naltrexone on top of of oxy's will only bring about one reaction....harsh withdrawls. Your doctors an idiot!!
If you wanna get off the oxys....try suboxone. Works great!
