Just for today
I quit 50 years ago at a "No Smoking" clinic offered by the University Health Service. It was led by a doctor who was the head of the department. He gave us each three Valium tablets, and said if things get really hard, take one of these. A few days later I was in the middle of one of the worst cravings so far. In addition to the cravings, I had something like a blinking sign in my head that hammered, "Cigarette, Cigarette, Cigarette." It was fast repeating and had been going on for an hour or more. I was never into tranquilizers, but I decided to try a Valium. A half hour later, it did absolutely nothing about the blinking and repeating in my mind. It just kept hammering away, but with the Valium, it didn't bother me so much, so I just sat there listening to it. Eventually, I lost interest, and my mind sort of drifted away from it. The whole incident just seemed strange. It kind of worked, but not at all as I anticipated it would.
