New revelations

This time last year we skipped on a group camping trip for a couple of reasons. Me being newly sober one was of them. The social aspect was another. And the fact that my husband was still a drinker was another (he has the tendency to turn into Mr Hyde when drinking sometimes). Im 9.5 months sober and my husband 3.5 months sober now. This year I decided to suck it up and go. And let me tell ya, it wasn’t bad at all! We even went to the brewery with the group. Here are my revelations.

- Sitting around getting drunk at a brewery is BORING. I’m sure in my drinking years I would’ve loved it. And I’m not judging those who went but I just looked around thinking we all had better things to do than sit drinking (where no food is even served!). We ended up leaving before the rest of our group and found an ice cream parlor.

- One night at our campsite, one of the dads came to hang out with us and 2 others. He was plastered. He sat with us slumped over and didn’t join the conversation - maybe afraid to slur words IDK. I’ve been there many times. But it reaffirmed why I quit. And that you can HAVE FUN and conversations without drinking!

Seeing friends drinking at 9:30-10am made me feel sorry for them. They are headed down that slippery slope that I fought for 10-15 years.

Hopefully me and my husband can be a positive influence but if not, I’m at a place where I’m okay with that too. I’m so thrilled my husband stopped. It’s made our relationship so much better.

People keep telling me how good I look. 2 people just today and one at the camp out. I’ve lost around 40 lbs and the only thing I did was stop drinking (no dieting).

Things are good. Life is better. And I’m happy to be alcohol FREE……..

As I was reading your post I couldn't help but laugh, stomp my feet, and high five the computer screen; all the while screaming "oh hell yeah!!!".
The dog is looking at me like I have lost my mind; but I reassured him that had already happened many many years ago.
Your post is spot on and so true. Amazing how our perspective changes with sobriety.
I was already having a good day, but your post is also an extra shove in that direction as well.
Thanks!

Well done on 9 months that's some achievement.

I remember going camping and got too drunk to put the tent up, so kipped under the stars in the rain, wrapped under the ground sheet. Not good.

Thankfully, those days are well behind me.
