Have you considered having an attitude ambivalence towards alcohol intoxication. On one hand it helps, yet on the same hand it hurts. I've experience just that in my recovery.
Once past indecision about stop the drink some clarity can set in. You can get there

There is a significant difference between something that happens to us and something that we do. Only one of them is beyond our capacity to change it.
All hell breaks loose, that’s why not. As well as I’m sure a myriad of other reasons. Perhaps a more pertinent question would be “Why?”.
