Gabapentin / naltrexone / acamprosate
ah ok. hopefully last q but what were positives for you in relation to that pill combination - was it anxiety relief, dealing with cravings, blocking euphoria from alcohol or some combination of all three?
I was prescribed Gabapentin by an ER doctor in December. Was there for withdrawal symptoms. It worked very well with anxiety levels and sleep. I ran out of my prescription and never got a new one. I could see myself forming a habit with it. Although, as far as I know, it's not addictive like benzos.
I've taken all three. Gabapentin helped with withdrawal and anxiety. Neurontin and acamprosate both seemed to be effective with reducing cravings, but it turned out that cravings were not really my issue. I'd guess if you're paying full price, the first two are less expensive than the Campral. You could always call the pharmacy and ask for a price quote for all three?
According to my primary physician, they're finding that naltrexone is more effective as a blocker for opiates than for alcohol, but I've read that it's worked miracles for some with alcohol as well...

I’m on campral/Acamprosate, beginning after detox in early January. I have been doing pretty well, with a lot of ups and downs but not too many cravings. But the thing is, I have no idea if the drug is helping.
I have gone off it twice for up to a week to give myself a break from GI side effects, and think maybe I noticed some return if cravings...but not sure. Campral is supposed to help reset the brain chemicals, GABA, glutamate, and theoretically make recovery a little easier, less PAWS, if you know about that.
Because I think it might be doing me some good I am planning to stay on it for at least 6 months. I’ll take all the help I can get!
I took naltrexone first, while still drinking. I had horrendous side effects, couldn’t tolerate it.
I first bought campral off my insurance plan, and I think it was about $150/month, but actually less for me because I’m taking less than prescribed dose. With insurance this month, don’t know cost yet.
