Update 1 year Sober for the newcomer
So many times over the years I crawled back here sick and depressed after drinking over and over again. I even stopped doing that eventually because I was so embarrassed at my weakness. A little over a year ago I decided to ask for help. I was sick and suicidal. I went to my doctor and confessed everything. She was so concerned about me that she called in a social worker. Then I crawled into an AA meeting.
2-6-2019 is my sober date. I cannot believe I actually did it. We cannot post pictures here, but I honestly do not even look like the same person anymore. I threw myself back into exercise and have been hard core at it 4-5 days a week for about 11 months now. I am not too big into AA being an Atheist, but I do go to an open discussion meeting a week. I find it helpful. I have made some friends and appreciate the sober social events. I need that connection. I tend to isolate and that is always my downfall. I have worked very hard and am cleaning up some serious financial wreckage. I am also getting my career back on track. A year ago I was convinced that I was going to drink myself to death. Today, I never want to touch that poison again. I am 51 years old and ready to move forward with my new life.
Do not give up! I am proof that sobriety is possible.

Thanks so much for your really inspiring post. Great to hear that it really does get better for me in my early days of recovery.
Would you consider putting your post on the 'It gets better' thread? It is one I go to often to hear of the success stories and the amazing changes to peoples lives when moving to a sober life. That thread really helps me when I am thinking that it is too hard and life was easier being blotto and not caring.
