6 months post transplant..

and I'm still thinking about drinking.
A family have given permission for their loved ones organ to be donated to me, skilled medical staff have taken care of me and the guilt I'm feeling even beginning to think about drinking again is overwhelming.

Cirrhosis is a truly, horrible illness, my AV is telling me that it's not and wants to go again.

Coming up for 12 months sober now, 49 yr old man.

Been a long time reader, first time poster. This is an excellent place by the way. Good luck to all who struggle daily.

Congratulations on nearly 12 months.

Try not to feel guilty about thoughts, we can't control thoughts. The important thing is what your actions are. Have you thought about writing down how ill you were as a reminder when your brain is romanticising drink?

I'm not very good with words.
Was just trying to say that even after cirrhosis and transplant my mind is still wandering back to alcohol, I won't act on it but it's lure is so powerful. It's surprised me.

Don't let your guilt push you back towards the poison. 12 months is terrific.

Phew I feel better now I've got that off my chest.

If anyone reading has been diagnosed cirrhosis or is on transplant waiting list please feel free to get in contact. I'm no medical expert but I have experienced both and I'd be more than happy to help in any way I can.

Welcome Slowtrain!

You are very lucky indeed you have a second chance after being on the brink of it all. Alcohol took from you your ultimate wealth, the only thing we have, your health and almost your life.

I am an alcoholic and I know about the lure of the AV and how sneaky it is. Do you have support? At this point I think you need help : AA, or inpatient or outpatient or support groups for transplant suvivors anything. Don't let alcohol back into your life its a poison that destroy us from inside out.

Not even a liver transplant will deter you from drinking again. it has happen before people who got transplants and went back and die horribly. This is an awful disease do not understimated. (I know I have)

Thank you for your post it has help me today. You are a survivor.

Best of luck and keep posting

sorry if i overreacted in my reply but personally I had lost jobs my career almost my marriage and i swear never again am done with alcohol. Guess what I go back at it like nothing has happened just like you said "Cirrhosis is a truly, horrible illness, my AV is telling me that it's not and wants to go again."

Awful stuff its like my brain is mush and am idiot.

rant over best of luck

Thanks H&S, no need to apologise, feel blessed that I could help in my own little chaotic way. I know what you mean about losing everything, I just ploughed on until a consultant sat me down and told me I was end stage, sharpens your focus somewhat.
As you say second chance now, having my first little wobble. Before diagnosis I had more blips than a radar.

Welcome SlowTrain. The one thing suggested to me to strengthen my sobriety was to practice gratitude every day. I did, tho it was hard at first, but it changed my life.

Man that is crazy! Lucky you made it, many die from that level of alcoholism.

Are you in any programs?

Hi SolidKarma,

I just go to the hospital for blood tests and see my consultant every 2 weeks, if there is any alcohol detected they can withdraw treatment so drink is not an option. It's just surprised me that after all that my AV is still vocal, thought it was long gone.

Sorry about your AV. Sounds like you need a good plan to deal with it unless you want to die.
Don’t feel guilty because the devil is whispering in your ear. Stay strong and develop more tools to deal with it.

Hi and welcome slowtraintodawn

I came here after several mini strokes and other health issues caused by drinking - and a part of me was still not willing to give up the
'someday' idea.

Thankfully I stuck around SR, stayed sober - and I grew and changed.

The only someday that counts now is I will die sober, someday

D
