Are you playing or are you drinking?
I want to share a pretty amazing experience with you all.
On Tuesday I went to CitiField (home to the New York Mets) and played softball *on the field* with some of my closest friends. It was a charity raffle that a friend had won and invited us to.
It was incredible. It was 80 degrees, but not humid. There was a slight breeze and moments of cloud coverage that offered great relief from the heat. We split ourselves off into teams (there were three other groups who had won the raffle.) Before, in between, and after, they had free drinks (water, soda, iced tea, and.. beer.)
There were a few moments during the day when the whereabouts of another player were unsure. I'd hear someone yell, "Hey! Are you drinking or playing?" - Basically, we had some guys that chose to sit out a few times to drink. It truck a cord with me. How many times did I bench myself from experiences/activities because my activity at the time was to just drink. The last time someone asked if someone was drinking or playing, I whispered to myself "I'm playing", and proceeded to almost catch a fly ball in the outfield. I'll get 'em next time

This is exactly why I have no issues currently or for some time not drinking. For me it was either/or. When I fully internalized that I am unable to do both, then the decision became easy. I will play.

Thanks for that , it reminds me of when if we are lucky enough to have a whole day of sunshine I'd get a BBQ going . Of course the long drawn out prep suited me perfectly , i'd have a half dozen buds down me before the coals were even lit and by the time food was ready i wasn't interested in eating , yes I fed everyone else and nibbled here and there but eating only got in the way of my drinking .

Playing and not being “benched” is much better
