How involved are sponsors and how soon should we find one?

I realize everyone's relationship with their sponsor is unique, but I have no idea what to expect. I've been to plenty of meetings and still drink. I don't want to, it's sooo miserably hard. Do I need to be sober for a certain amount of time to find a sponsor? How will I know who is a good fit? Do they need a certain amount of sober time or years to be a sponsor? What should I expect our relationship to be?
Thanks for any input

I am not an AA person, but I think you should try to find someone who clicks with you when you chat with them. I think others will have more advice for you.

In my experience and in my home group area, a Sponsor's primary responsibility is to take you thru the 12 Steps. Therefore, I suggest asking at meetings if anyone has been completely thru the 12 Steps, and is willing to take you thru them.

My next best suggestion is to find Big Book study meetings and 12 & 12 Book meetings and attend them regularly.

If you are interested, the link below has speaker Messages specifically discussing Steps 1,2 ,3. If you find them helpful, I have Speaker Messages for all 12 Steps, which I use with people I work with (Sponsor).

Hi LifeChanges,

I'm still quite new to sobriety, but I believe I do owe my sobriety to AA.

When I first entered the fellowship these are the messages I heard...

Keep coming back until you hear the messages
Get a home group
Get a Sponsor - find someone who has what you want. eg. They are sober, content and spiritually healthy.
Get started on the step work

I have a home group and a Sponsor. As you say, each relationship is different. I call my Sponsor each day to check in and also any other time when things are feeling difficult or if I'm feeling happy about something and I want to share. We meet every week to do step work and also see each other at meetings.

My sponsor has a very similar story to mine and I find that helps for me. There is also the option of a temporary sponsor.

If you pray, you could ask for guidance on this?
