Wanted to say thank you
After lots of empty promises (usually to myself, but also to others too) and lots of faltering mis-starts, I have finally managed to knock drinking on the head and, to date, have not had a drink for 59 consecutive days. The last time I did that I was in my teens - now, sadly, a couple of decades in the past. Although I recognise that I am not likely ever to 'be normal' with respect to alcohol, I am beginning to feel like I might be able to manage without it. I can't tell you how happy that thought makes me. I wouldn't even have imagined I would be saying that earlier in the year.
Although this is my first post here, I have been reading messages posted here for a while, particularly since I started to try to stop drinking, and I wanted to say thank you to those who have posted here - your messages, stories and testimonies have motivated, encouraged and inspired me to come as far as I have and (fingers crossed) to continue in this vein for good. Thank you.

I think the thought that you might not need alcohol is great.
I think when I thought about giving up, I could not imagine life without a drink.
What would I do about a bad day at work?
What would happen if I argued with my now ex?
In both cases I would have dealt with the above by drinking and truly drowning my sorrows.
I'm 5 years drink free in Feb 2017.
I can honestly say that nothing has been so bad that I have had to drink or really fight the urge.
In the 5 years I have faced redundancy, moved house, my partner left me, a close family member died and I have had episodes of ill health.
But I never drank.
I learnt the following from Dee 'everything will be okay in the end. If it is not okay, it is not the end'.
For me this has been key to me dealing with life without a drink.
Nothing has ever felt that bad that I have reached for the vodka.
Keep coming here.
Never give up.
