Yes, the anxiety will get worse for a few days after quitting. It is part of withdrawal. The central nervous system has been sedated with all the alcohol you have been using and now it's trying to find balance again, but in the meantime it feels "ramped up."
If you are suffering, please get some medical help. Urgent care can give you a few pills to help you through this if it's unbearable.
It will get better. Keep talking.
How much did you drink yesterday?

I did not drink yesterday but had the one beer today. The panic attack subsided and I am feeling better. Went for a long walk again and it really helped. I think I will be ok. Thank you everyone. Finally people I can relate to.
Oh, good deal, Maggie.
When I quit I did a taper - and like you I went from quite-a-few to not-as-many and then none and I did go back and have one on the first actual "dry" day. It was medicine - but I never did it again.
This can be your last drink today. The anxiety should be a little less tomorrow and you won't have another one. I hope you will make it through the rest of today without another. If you wake up in the night feeling panicky, come here - there is always someone around to talk.
If you have anything sweet in your house, go to that first in these next couple days. Often it's a blood sugar problem. We're here...keep talking.
