Im from UK and in my experience over the years with GPs they don't really know how to handle us . They show you a leaflet with information on safe alcohol unit levels which has some "useful phone numbers" like your local drugs and alcohol service who I found very unhelpful . A GP here is likely to hand out a script for librium and strong vitamin B and point you towards the afore mentioned service . Never once did a GP advised a tapering strategy which would,t never have worked for me anyway . I think it all depends on the actual GP in terms of personality how helpful he/she will be IE one will be very sympathetic and spend some time listening to some deeper issues such as family relationships ,work etc . Most unfortunately just don't have the time .
