Starting Right Now

Hi all, I've been drinking beer on the weekends since I was 13. Now at age 53 I realize that my drinking has harmed me emotionally, physically, and spiritually. I drank a beer earlier today then opened a second one, drank half and then thought, what am I doing? I don't want to to drink anymore ever, whether on a weekend or otherwise. So I took the beer, dumped it out and thought time to move on. Not having that 1st beer is key for me right now. Thanks for letting me share here. My family and friends don't think I have a problem but I feel I do and that's all that matters.

Welcome to the family! It is up to you to decide if you have a problem or not. Glad you've made the decision to get sober. I hope our support can help you stay sober for good.

Great job on realizing you may have a problem.
I started drinking at fourteen and stopped when I was fifty one.
Took me awhile to realize I had a problem as the weekends turned into every day, so you're smart to stop now.
Stick around here, you'll find lots of support.
Best to you.

Well done for realising that it's the first drink that does the damage and leads to the insanity of the subsequent drinks. I think many of our normie friends and family have a very set idea of what alcoholism looks like, and struggle to get their heads round the reality of it. Besides, many of us carefully contract an outside persona that tells the world we're fine when really we're in pieces, struggling with shame, resentment and fear which are pretty much combine to make the emotional state of an alcoholic (drinking, or sober without working on their recovery ).

Wishing you all the best for your recovery. There are plenty of sober alcoholics in recovery who will understand just how your feeling and what you are going through. Reach out and let them guide you on this journey. None of us have to do this alone.

PS. Re your title typo. I feel for you. Auto-correct can be such a vile enemy.

Monday was a good day at work because I wasn't sick with a hangover and/or tired due to a drunken sleep Sunday night. I feel more clear headed at work today (Tuesday) which I also attribute to sobriety. I guess the weekend drinking affected me during the week even more than I thought.
