The Silver Lining

So my dog got into Orbit gum last night and ate 9 pieces when I wasn't looking. I went with my gut and researched the possible effects and what I found out about a sweetener in that gum is very toxic to dogs and if not treated immediatly could suffer liver damage etc... I rushed her to the vet at midnight last night. So of course I'm stressed and she is my baby. A nice thought I had today though was if I had been drinking on a Saturday night how could I have driven her?? Or would I even had the sense to check out the potential dangers?? Thank goodness I was sober and able to function. This is a good lesson on something going bad and were drunk.

She is still at the vet but seems to be doing ok. She had some abnormal liver enzymes (?) last night but they are stable. They are thinking I can pick her up in a few hours fingers crossed!

I'm happy your doing is doing well.

Although I get what you're saying, and I'm being snarky, being available to ourselves and to those we love in sobriety is not a silver lining; it's a main effect.

I'm not really sure what the silver lining means. I'm just glad I was sober. Even after the outrageous vet bill, I'm still sober.

Did she at least leave you a piece ? ;-)

In all seriousness.. I get what your saying about what you could or would of been able to do if drunk.

Hope your gal is Ok!

Thank you for this, on so many levels.

I did not know that gum is bad for dogs, and my dog steals things from the counter. Thank you.

Yes I have been trying to bring awareness since the incident! It is sugar free gum that has the chemical xylitol in that is poisonous to animals. I had no idea! Research shows it's way more dangerous then chocolate!

Thank you for your post! I have thought the same things over the past sober months...... "I never would have done the right thing when I was drinking" I hope everything remains well with her.

Yes, Linz - I felt the same way the night my Lab got porcupine quilled & we had to hunt for a vet at 1:00am. Definitely not on our toes when we're half in the bag. Thanks for a helpful post. Glad doggie got help right away.

My dog is sick as well. I think he ate a sock. He's done it before, even though we try very hard to keep socks aware from him. It is so stressful. We will take him to the vet tomorrow if he doesn't improve.

I hope your doggie will be ok. I know the feeling of being ready to go at a moment's notice. I lost my little chihuahua this spring to an accident but was able to drive her to the vet. Had I been drinking, I would have risked an accident or DUI. Just glad to be sober to take good care of my furry kids.

I know exactly how good you feel being sober and able to get your dog to the vet. Our dog had what turned out to be a ruptured spleen. In my drinking days I probably would have waited until the morning to do anything. That would have been too late. Yeah, sober is so much better!

I Hope your dog is ok and good for you to chk if it was harmful. I would have thought it would cause a blockage. Had no idea about the sorbitol which is in many things we eat. You saved his life by not drinking!!!
