My first week done
My first week done
Hi all
Just wanted to share coming to the end of my first week.
It's been eventful really.
Sunday - Withdrawal. Shakes, sweats, weakness, exhaustion
Monday - Withdrawal. Shakes, sweats, exhaustion
Tuesday - Still in withdrawal but much lesser. Dragged myself to rehab centre and had some acupuncture. Crawled under the covers and slept.
Wednesday - No physical withdrawal. Straight to recovery centre in the morning to start therapy. Met a few people and spoke about my situation. Cooked something that would pass as real food for the first time in probably 3 months.
Thursday - All physical withdrawal properly gone. Got up early, went straight to recovery centre. Felt less anxious and more at ease with the situation. Sat in on a few more groups and talked to lots of service users. Went home, again cooked real food.
Friday - Straight to recovery centre again, spent all day there. Ended up joining the womens group and got roped into making 50 cupcakes for a fundraising afternoon. Had a meeting with my key worker who was impressed I dragged myself there in week 1 and said I looked very different to the person she met 2 weeks ago at the assessment unit. Pleased to hear this and it spurred me on. Came up with a recovery plan - intensive 12 week program, 6 days per week with minimum of 8 group therapy sessions, to begin on Monday.
Saturday - Went to breakfast club at the recovery centre and stayed most of the day. Did a bit of food shopping, cooked a nice dinner and watched a movie.
Sunday - A friend from the recovery centre came round for coffee. Went to the local retail park and treat myself to some new trainers and a rucksack to congratulate myself on a week of sobriety and confronting a lot of scary things.
It's been a rollercoaster week, but one that I wouldn't swap for the world because it means I've set foot on a path that I do not want to deviate from. It won't be an easy path, but if I can do this first 7 days then I can do the 12 week program. I have too much to lose to give up.
Interestingly the past 2 days I haven't even thought about drinking - just which therapy groups to go to and what I would like to cook for dinner.
Chin up to everyone starting out, I really hope you are getting the help you need. I feel lucky to have been offered the opportunity to have this therapy and wish it was more readily available to many more people...
Here's to the next week!
Happy Sunday everyone

Nice job! Journaling your experience is very wise of you - I wish I would've done that too. People here say that months down the road of recovery it can be really easy to forget all of the pain we went through during the first few days of sobriety
Sounds like a great week to me!!! Great work!!!
Getting involved with a support group and doing service work like you're doing is so powerful!!! Keep hanging out with those folks and stay the middle of the herd..
Helping others and volunteering your time is so good for the soul!! Very important in recovery!
You're working it!! Nice job!!
