Has the booze given me diabetes???
Hi there all
Not sure if Im in the right forum here.
I packed in the booze 6th Jan this year so in my 10th week now yay!!
At first all was ok, I didnt have cravings and so I made the most of this and ate healthily, started to walk/run and felt great.
About 4 weeks ago tho, I started having mad sweet cravings. I gave into them and fed my body what it craved as I thought resisting it might turn me back to wine.
But now I am worried. Has the long term drinking messed about with my blood sugars and/or insulin?
Had a blood test today so I am waiting on results next week.
PS I had the mirena coil fitted 4 weeks ago too, could the hormones in the coil be the cause of the cravings or is this just coincidence?
Any advice will be appreciated.
Thanks
ANn

I've always loved sweets, perhaps that was my "first" addiction. My mom also loves sweets, and yet she's non-diabetic. My dad uses tons of sugar in his coffee, he's also non-diabetic.
That said, you need a formal/official diagnosis from an actual doctor to confirm whether or not you are diabetic. Stay away from "Dr. Google" when checking symptoms, you'll drive yourself crazy doing that.
Early in recovery i read a number of sites on the topic, and discovered that the alcohol molecule is "very similar" to sugar molecules.... or something like that. Perhaps that might explain your sudden sweet tooth.
I think grubby has already answered you pretty well, but I'm glad you went to get a blood test. Too many of us here in early recovery are afraid to go to the doctor. It's easier to hide our heads in the sand sometimes. Good on you for taking the next right step.

It seems rather common that drinkers can end up with pre-diabetes or diabetes. At any rate testing is the best idea, even those who do not drink can end up with it too. A healthy diet never hurts either, but I'm no example of that yet...lol.
