I sat down with the IRS

Amongst the piles of fallout from a long and spiraling drinking career were, for me, a number of dire financial consequences.

One such was the fact that through not having the money to pay the IRS, not keeping up with the responsibility of filing, and flat out just not CARING about any of it - I'd gotten a number of years behind and created for myself a big fat tax mess.

This came alongside a lot of debt, a chronic habit of over-spending and a seemingly-endless cycle of being financially stuck despite a good career and strong salary.

Well.... I am happy to report that as of yesterday, I sat down with the IRS and not only am I free of any burden or fear, free of any outstanding liability or responsibility, free of the constant worry that I am going to suffer some dire consequence of my irresponsibility - but I am also going to be receiving a check in the mail!!!

In just two years of sobriety, I've gotten debt-free, begun to save a significant amount toward retirement, begun to build up an emergency fund (my goal being 6-12 months living expenses) and begun to make increasingly-better financial decisions - but now I've also for the first time in ten years gotten square with the government.

There's a huge weight lifted....

Just one more positive in a long and ever-deepening string of positives that come along with choosing sobriety.

That's fantastic FreeOwl! Way to go.

A few years back I needed to do something that required gubment approval.
Turns out there were 8 years I decided against filing a tax return come back to bite me. I guess they never really cared too much because in the end I had a windfall of almost 10 grand. I spent quite a few years just tossing mail in the bin and not 'playing along' with society.

Since being sober, I am able to address things as they happen, and accept whatever the outcome.

You can have reasons, or you can have results, but you can't have both.

You're talking my language! I had IRS problems too and one of the beautiful things about sobriety is that these things aren't overwhelming! We can sit down, figure this stuff out, and get our affairs in order!

Great feeling, isn't it?

I look forward to writing my monthly checks.....actually, today I can be pleasant and talk with creditors or those I need to pay and calmly work out a plan. Another gift of sobriety!
