New here and frightened !
Well ! I'm not really sure what to say but here goes ! I'm an alcoholic, a real problem drinker ! It was always fun for the most part but as it progressed it began to affect my whole life and upset my beautiful partner ! I decided to stop dead ! Cold turkey ! I've been sober now for 25 hours ! And last night was pretty uncomfortable! It doesn't sound like much I know but it's a big step for me and hopefully the first of many ! I'm so afraid !

Hi and welcome.
This can be the best decision for your health and many other aspects of your life.
It’s not always easy or hard but it takes a very strong desire to stop on a permanent basis.
My sobriety started when I became honest with myself about my drinking AND accepted the fact I cannot drink in safety one day at a time in a row.
It helps greatly to not think about drinking, try non drinking thoughts and get active instead of perhaps isolating. Drinking lots of fluids and sweet things do help overall.
Lots of reading the different forums help understand the process of sobriety.
KEEP COMING AND BE WELL

Hello Greer. Welcome to SR. It is truly an amazing place and you can get well with the support here. You could check out the Class of September 2015 thread and hook up with a lot of people starting out just like you.
Well done for taking the first step.

Hi all and thank you for the messages of support! It is day 3 ! Still sober !!!! Most of the really bad effects I.e. Shaking, sweating, terror have decreased now to a manageable level thank god ! Brain is still whirring but I expect that to continue for some time ! Reading this and other sites are vital in letting the newly sober know that the living hell you experience in the first few hours and days ofmaking by your decision are NOT PERMENANT ! And as you feel progressively better the feeling that only a drink could save you will slowly start to leave you ! This is only my beginning and much work still needs done, but already, 3 days in I feel so grateful to be sober !
Certainly does get better. Much. The first week is the worst week because of the withdrawal stuff. Tests and challenges continue to come but if you can put together 90 days or so it really starts to change. All the best!
Greer,
I just wanted to mention that being afraid, like you mentioned you were, at least at first -- being afraid isn't such a bad thing. It can help keep you aware of what it is you don't want to do. I have found that when I don't fear using anymore, I am more likely to go ahead and relapse.
I think sometimes exploring a negative feeling, instead of just cowering under it, can be enlightening, and empowering.

Welcome to SR, Greer, and congrats on day three. I second Amp's suggestion to join and actively participate in the Class of September thread found on this same forum. It's a great way to learn from and help others who are also in early recovery.
I still struggle with sleep. Please never never never drink and let that voice say "at least I can sleep". It gets better after a week. I take vitamins to help. Research vitamins to increase serotonin, vitamins to sleep, and vitamins to help nervous system. I have trouble falling asleep but do fall asleep. A month ago I would lay awake in agony, pain, and anxiety. It takes a week to get over. Don't give up please. Your partner needs you sober.
