grant me the serenity

to accept the things I cannot change.

Is anyone else watching the stock market? This is my first month of investing and my anxiety is skyrocketing! It's a terrible time.

I'm almost 4 months sober. I'm not going to drink...but...OMG. I can't change the world economy, but "serene" is not in my vocabulary right now!

Yep I watched the opening and said to myself what a beautiful buying opportunity! So it depends on which side of the fence you’re on. I often need to remind myself don’t play the market or gamble what I cannot afford to lose.
As someone famous said “if we can’t stand the heat stay out of the kitchen.”

Whatever happens it’s not worth drinking over.

BE WELL

Hi JK

I think the thing to remember is when stocks go down like this - in a general way cos people got spooked - they always come up again.

Hope it works out ok for you

It does seem to be a natural course of things.

I'm glad you know it's out of your control.

Thanks for your responses. I am a most conservative and frugal person. Freaking out...but not drinking. A few months ago I would be burying myself in booze. But, I did that every night anyway

My advice....

Get out ASAP. Take your losses. Right now they are less than 10%

I believe it is going to crash hard.

Then get back in.

Perhaps financial advice -- or more generally, fear-based advice of any kind -- ought to be avoided on SR just as medical advice is.

I think unless you are going to retire tomorrow you have time to ride it out. If you drink you will still have taken a hit in the stock market plus you will be drunk. Tomorrow is another day.

Red face

Thanks Della, Your advice is good for anyone facing almost any challenge. I can't think of anything that "goes better with drunk".

BTW I did just recently retire! WooHoo!

The medical advice rule is there for obvious reasons.
We can't legislate for everything tho

Other types of advice - be it legal financial or whatever - are not against the rules...

but I'd expect everyone to use common sense and get a wide range of advice including, ideally, professional advice

Hi -- check out this graph -- https://www.google.com/search?q=dow+..._sm=0&ie=UTF-8 -- go for the "max" years display.

So far not so scary as in 2008.

Yep, longing for the "good old days" when money was kept under the mattress...

Hang in there. The pendulum will swing again.

I am keeping my eyes shut. Yes, it's very concerning but any investments I have are conservative so while I don't make a killing when the stock market is good I also don't get killed when it's bad.

Ya just gotta ride it out and know it will improve again.

If it makes you feel any better, in the past 30 days I've lost exactly 27.30% of my savings.

I have made some money on the market. My exit strat has always been about 10%.

I got out, paid off all my debt, and got back in. I took about a 30% hit on my gains. I fired my money guy. I no longer worry as much about money.

Most of my money is bonds and similar stable investments. Fixed Index Annuities are amazing.

I expect a continual down turn in the near future. Then I am poised to get back in wit some mad money.

I don't trust money managers. That is how I lost my arse.

Troy
It most definitely does not make me feel better that you have experienced financial loss. I am so sorry. I know how stressful money issues are. I hope you are, or will be, in a position to recoup soon. If you figure out a way...make sure to share!

Elledee, I'm new to the "eyes open" position...and think maybe I should go back to not looking. Lol. We think alike.
