Meditation
Meditation
I always hear "meditation" in the rooms, on SR, from old timers, from my mother...
I knew how to meditate when I was little and into my early 20's, but along with everything else, alcohol sucked that out of me and everything spiritual. I would like to add this into my toolbox.
How does meditation work for you? And how do YOU do it? Is there a specific time of the day?

It can be on a run, in the car in a parking lot for a few minutes, on a walk, in the woods..... Or in a comfortable intentionally-created meditation space.
Nice thing about meditation is it can be done anywhere anytime. It's simple, accessible and free.
Yet I don't do it nearly enough.....

I found some podcasts with guided meditations that I listen to before bed and sometimes at lunch. On the fly, I try to follow Eckhart tolle's recommendation to stop and focus on your breath and feel your heartbeat and the blood pulsing through your body and that connection to the life force.
I like the idea of meditating first thing in the morning but it hasn't become a reality for me.

It's first thing in the morning here. I just did some simple stretches and a 15 minute breathing meditation and...wow. Add this one to my toolbox! I also have to start exercising. I have no choice. I am in poor shape physically and have a physical test in 2 months for a civil service position. Exercise might be my next tool. My brain is so quiet right now.

Hi countrygirl,
I meditate when I do yoga. It's a part of both my regular personal practice, and when I teach a yoga class. The time of day varies for me, depending on the class. But I agree it can be done anywhere, anytime. ...There are many guided meditations on Youtube, which I can highly recommend. They are free and quite effective. Check them out.

Exercise and meditation are symbiotic. They go together to form our greatest anti-depressant, our strongest mood booster, our spiritual wellness kit.
Even if all you can muster is a daily walk.... Start there. Meditation and exercise will support your sobriety and save your life.

I do awareness/breathing exercises in random places-- riding in the elevator, walking to the store, etc. Now I want to start doing 5 mins daily dedicated to actual sitting meditation. 5 mins isn't much, but my understanding is that if you start short it comes more naturally and then you can easily increase the time. Meditation is one of many things I've always wanted to do but which got squeezed out by alcohol.

I meditate while hosting dinner parties. J/k I am struggling with meditation right now. Have tried a few guided meditations, but I find having a warm soak while listening to relaxation music works the best for me.
Just carve out some quiet time and sit/lay back and relax. Breathe in slowly. Tense every muscle in your body starting at your feet and work up. Talk to God/HP. Feel the serenity and calm. Even a walk in nature can bring pleasant feelings. Namaste.

I try to do it for 5-10 minutes a day, but it's a habit I haven't managed to fully commit to yet.
It works. For me it assists concentration, impulsivity and mood. I sit down and do my best to direct all my attention to the sensation of breathing
