Sober rock stars
Michael Monroe from Hanoi Rocks. Just recently learned this, listened to a song called trick of the wrist that was obviously about benefits of sobriety. Then did a search and found out he does not drink or do drugs. Awesome, add him to this thread!

I was looking through this thread and found a comment from 2015 that resonates with me: "People in finance party like rock stars without the fame". That is sooo true! I don't blame my alcoholism one bit on my career choice, but it certainly didn't stand in the way.

I've thought about this very subject many times. How do rock stars, A-list actors and actresses, retired professional athletes get and stay sober. Their entire life is defined by excess.....of everything. I think those than can beat it are pretty special people. Which is probably how they became rich and famous to begin with. I'd like to get the funding to do an in-depth study on this very topic, then write a book.
I actually disagree, Jeff. They may be talented and well-off; they're also surrounded by hangers on, etc., who don't have their best interests at heart. But when it comes down to it, A listers have to do the same things we do in order to stay sober and live in recovery.

I've read some pretty astounding stories about Elvis Presley towards the end of his life. They basically had him on a drug schedule and knew what and when to give him his drugs so he could perform the 2-3 hrs per night. The rest of the time he was having the time of his life (or so he thought) yet didn't even know what was going on.
I've known some rock stars (admittedly on the way down when I played with them, but still 'names').
They still had a retinue of people dedicated to 'keeping them happy' - and more often than not, that meant drugs.
Happily just about all of them that are still with us are in recovery now

Phil Collen from Def Leppard (became worried about his drinking and quit in 1988; hasn't had a drink since)
Alex Van Halen (once a horrific alcoholic who quit in early 1987 and, apart from a brief relapse in 1995, has been sober ever since)
Warren Cuccurullo from Duran Duran (not an alcoholic, but a health nut who became a teetotaler)
Alice Cooper (was a raging alcoholic who quit after he began throwing up blood; been sober since the late '70s)
Maurice Gibb from the Bee Gees (for more than a decade before his death)
Jeff Watson from Night Ranger
