Prayer in Recovery

Good evening all.

Just got back from this evenings meeting. I shared on the topic of prayer.

Here's the deal. I'm new to praying. I'm doing it every night and every morning, even though I have no idea how. At least that's what I used to think.

I now look at in a different light. My prayers are deeply personal...I can't pray incorrectly and I can't have someone show me how to pray. It has to be from myself, and the thing is...I think I already know how...but it's like I forgot?..if that makes any sense.

Anyways..my new thoughts on prayer is...it's like breathing, no one taught me how to breathe...it just came natural and I do it without thinking.

The only way to breathe wrong is to STOP. I think prayer is the same...I just need to keep praying in my own way.

I'm 15 days sober tonight. And off to pray...in my own time and way.

I was taught that when I pray I need to speak to my God as if he's in the room and I'm having a conversation with my best friend who loves me very much - so that's what I do; I ask Him for things, but first I tell him how grateful I am for the things He has blessed me with - especially my sobriety. Prayer is where I run when I'm happy (to say thank you) and when I'm fearful or angry (to ask for help) - without prayer I would be lost. Good for you Findingtheway for finding your own way

I'm not into "reciting" prayers, feels too much like reading God a book someone else wrote.

If I'm in a jam I might, but the more I freestyle it, the easier it gets.

I take the "Father - Child" aspect ... like I used to ask my (earth) Dad to help me with stuff ... like teach me how to play golf for example.

I had no idea, how to hold a club, which clubs are best for the type of shot, how to set up for a putt, the rules of the game ... I knew none of it.

Dad taught me everything I needed to know and with practice, I became a pretty decent player. (If I do say so myself)

Same thing with God .... "Hey Dad, I seem to have made a bit of a mess of things, including myself ... I need some help with XYZ"

Seems to be working out pretty sweet so far.

Nice post FTW. !!

Personally, I think there's a lot to what Kierkegaard said, findingtheway

“The function of prayer is not to influence God, but rather to change the nature of the one who prays.”

Well done with 15 days.
I too like the prayer, for me it's like an affirmation of my thoughts and very balancing
