Denial?
I agree, we do. I have no problem with calling myself an alcoholic however. I am. I drank alcohol obsessively and left to my own devices, still would.
So I had to give up "control of my devices". I was doing a crappy job of it. I think most of us (all humans) do when we try constantly to run the show. I've been going to CODA (co-dependents anonymous) meetings where most of the folks do not have substance abuse problems. They know however, something is wrong; they're just not happy campers.
I've believed for some time that the 12 steps can help just about anyone live a healthier, happier life. The illusion that we can directly control our happiness by manipulating our surroundings are just that, an illusion. Once we let go and just let it be, we start to feel better. Serenity.
