Benfotiamine
Hi,
Has anyone used Benfotiamine (a form of thiamine) to address alcohol-related pain/tingling in the feet ?
I am not asking for medical advice but would love to know about your experience if you have used it.
Thanks ,
S

Never used it.
Regardless of the response here, I'd run it past your Dr. Icandothis...what worked for someone else may not work or even be suitable for you.
If you're not happy with your current Dr, get a second opinion...it's obvious this neuropathy is weighing heavily on your mind.

Thanks Dee and Soberwolf,
I am indeed very frustrated with the excruciating pain in my foot. I went to two orthopedic specialists ( so I did get a second opinion) who said there was no problem with the toe joint which has sharp, shooting pains coming out of it and going along the arch of the foot. The other toes on that foot tingle and even the ones on the other foot feel weird. The Mri of my foot, X-ray and ultrasound were all clear. So I went back to my gp and confessed all about my past heavy drinking which all but stopped a year ago apart from a recent bout because I could not cope with the pain . He thought it was possibly alcoholic neuropathy and that it was possible to have a lag between stopping drinking and the pains appearing ( which another doctor subsequently refuted) . He did blood tests ( including b vitamins ) which were all normal. I then went to see a neurologist who MRIed my brain and spine ( normal) , did more blood tests ( normal) and a nerve conduction study ( normal ). He put me on Neurontin ( gabapentin) which does indeed numb the pain but makes me feel woozy . So I just don't know what to do ... When I stop the neurontin, the pain is still there and it is truly excruciating . I am at a loss as to how to sort it out .. I have had endless doctors' opinions to no avail. I myself am of the opinion it could be alcohol related because I drank a lot for a long time ( although not in the last year) . Hence my question about benfotiamine ... Sorry to bother you with this never ending story but am really really worried/ exasperated ...I just don't know what to do! :-(

Hi S -
I had some similar sounding RSS pain in my arms a while back - it was very frustrating to see many drs with no solution, and very painful. I was scared I would never heal.
Turns out all I had to do was find the right medic who could properly diagnosis it through problem solving - most drs are better at regurgitating memorized solutions. Nerve problems are complex in that a problem can be at one point, and felt at another, and there is a lot that is still not understood, which makes it a field better suited to a problem solving approach - the problem's source could even be in your hip!
I found my medic by going to a research hospital and asking the head of the sports medicine program who he would see personally if he had a hard to diagnose nerve injury - he gave me the name of someone who wasn't on his staff. It still took 10 visits with the same dr to sort it out.
RE: Benfortamine - B vitamins are water soluble, so your body will excrete the excess in your urine unless it needs it (and per the test it sounds like it won't need it). Should you try, let your GP know - he can trouble shoot better the more info he has.
Good luck!
