Stop and breathe!?

So on day 14 (yay) round 3 for me but hey I'm getting there.

Feeling positive mentally and well physically. Ready to take on the world alcohol free (one day at a time) I am active, feel interaction with people and life again, I can speak without feeling teary, emotional, guilty and well bl**dy sorry for myself. My worry has lessened, I look and feel generally more like my old self (whoever she is - time will tell!)

Anyway, I was at my CBT counsellor last night and we were discussing my fear of drinking again. For me as soon as I get an alcoholic thought of drink I have NEVER resisted or thought of coping mechanisms for this. My self esteem is so low I have honestly never thought I had a choice in the matter but to say "yeah okay I'll go get a few bottles" to hear something as simple as stop, breathe, think about your actions and the consequences from this was sheer genius (well for me anyway) I have a choice not to drink!? WHAT!? Turns out I do.

Just wanted to share.

Hope everyone is having a good day.

L x

Great job FG on day 14!!!!

Being afraid of drinking is something I deal with to. It's common to be afraid.

And I love the fact you used the phrase "choice in the matter"... Because we all do. You do. I do. We have free will choice although addiction makes us think we don't.

Tell that addictive voice that you have the control and power and choice to not drink so go away!

Welcome to SR!!! Keep going strong!

Another cool thing is that the more you exercise that choice to not drink, the less fearful you will become of drinking thoughts.

Sounds like you're doing great! Keep it up!

Nicely done on your 14 days!

Part of the fear I still experience is related to major life events, specially negative ones and how I would deal with them without the sauce.

Losing a loved one would put me in a really bad spot in my recovery.

Thanks for the useful post
