Question Hello & I need employment references help!

Hello,

I just thought I'd post here and say hello. I've been sober for about a month and I'm trying to get back into employment.

I don't know if this is the right place to ask but I've found a job that I like the sound of but they want two references. I can't ask my friends as they want work email address, not like Hotmail or anything. I left my previous jobs under bad circumstances. I basically cracked under pressure, turned even more to my addiction and never left on good terms. I have no references and I don't know what to write on the form.

Any advice would be amazing.

Thanks.

A few suggestions:

-Teacher/Professors from school
-Sports coaches
-Members of any clubs societies you were a part of
-Any jobs no matter how far back you didn't leave on bad terms with
-Church Ministers/Priests etc
-Friends of the family who are doctors/teachers/work for local government etc
-Have you ever done any volunteering

Welcome Jane

PK's suggestions are good ones - I know others will have suggestions too.

I'd go for character references - not from your friends but from people you know well who may be in positions of authority - local pastor, MP, bank manager etc

If you have workmates from your previous workplaces who'd be prepared to give you a character reference that could help too.

In the end, references are important but they don't count nearly as much as how you present yourself at the interview IMO.

I hope it works out

D

Thanks everyone! I actually had a stroke of good luck yesterday. I contacted an old colleague on LinkedIn, told her my situation and she offered a reference and a potential job!
