new to recovery

Hello, been seriously working on sobriety since January 1st 2014. I have been drinking for 30 years. My 50th birthday is April 30th and I am ready to get better. I am here looking for support and thoughts about challenges as they present themselves. Would love to hear from recovering deadheads or hippies, as that has been my family for a long time. But would love any support out there from kind people.

Hello onebear! It's great to have you with us. I drank for 30 yrs. too - and it's wonderful to be free. You can do it.

Hi Onebear! Been drinking for almost 30 years. Love the Dead and I am on day 37. From reading the posts, it seems that different things work for different people. Personally, I'm not an AA guy. I've been reading some great books that have changed my perspective on drinking, I also practice AVRT. I try to eat relatively healthy and exercise. Plan on getting into some mediation as well. I also regularly come on to this site and read peoples stories. This combination seems to work well for me so far. But everyone is different. Some people prefer AA, or Rational Recovery or therapy. Whatever you feel may work for you, I do think you should try to get some kind of plan. Best of luck and you will find tons of support from the many amazing people on this forum!

Hey not sure how to navigate this site yet, but betterlife1, I voluntarily entered into rehab 6 months ago, am going to regular therapy and group, not aa, and just this week agreed to be med monitored. Its so hard though as I am sure you all know. Immediate problem is Mardi gras here in manitou springs saturday. My friends, shakedown street are playing, I have friends staying here, its a big party. Thinking about camping and getting out of town. How do you all handle events like this?

I rarely go to drinking events but if I had to I'd go with an escape plan in mind. Just in case I was tempted to drink I'd go home early.

And yes, I am a child of the sixties. Bell bottoms and all.

Hi onebear, welcome to the SR family. Have you explained to your friends that you are working on your sobriety? Just be honest with them and hopefully they won't trigger a relapse for you. Even a small sign on the front door that says "alcohol and drug free zone" could do the trick.

Handle the event with DETERMINATION! Have a bottle of water, tea, soda or something else in your hand. One other thing.... HAVE FUN!

Glad you are here with us. Good Luck!

Welcome to SR Onebear,
I like your idea of going camping !

We have a big drunkfest across the river on St Patty's day next month.

What used to be crazy fun, .....now, seems tedious.

If the weather holds , I'm going fishin' instead!?!

Whatever you decide , do whatever it takes not to crack open that first one
