Took a DUI
Got arrested for DUI. Although I believe charges will be dropped I finally have been sober for 17 days. Longest time ever and it's been good during week but hard on weekends..

I was dumb enough to go downtown. ****** thing is I slid on ice and there was nothing I could do to avoid getting pulled over. But it was a wake up call because I have a lot to lose professionally if I keep it up..

]Yes mainly my wife staying on me but I know all the tools being a therapist myself. Only now motivated to head my own advice[/QUOTE]
I have found this to he somewhat counter-productive unless I, MYSELF really wanted it. Not to say I don't love and appreciate her for sticking with me through everything but in the throws of my addiction, when I really didn't want it, I resented her. Which wasn't fair to her.

Got another DUI in 2011.
I hope your wake up call sticks.
Congrats on 17 days..... I would encourage you to look at the broader span of your life and your relationship with alcohol with DEEP honesty.
Perhaps this DUI is just an unfortunate coincidence causing you to rethink some general carelessness with booze - but in the tone of your post I am hearing the echoes of it being more than that. If so... search deeply and honestly.... don't throw away another decade of your life...

DUI was the straw that broke the camels back so to speak. There are many other issues as well. Drinking to the point of anger, impulsive behavior, and feeling like crap all the time.
3 weeks ago tonight is the last time I drank and the night I got the DUI.

I agree with Weaver that using one's spouse as a "control" never works. Merely starts up a game, hiding bottles, drinking in spouse's absence, etc. Sobriety has to come from within. If things get bad enough then it's possible. Good luck.

The wife is one of many controls. At this point, there is no getting away with drinking while she is not around.
I may get lucky with the DUI because the police officer seemed to be a rookie and did not collect much evidence against me. Either way it was a point in time to take a break.

My DUI cost me over $9000.00 due to a lawyer who advised me to fight it when he later admitted that the evidence against me was to damning to win. He charged me the fee knowing we would lose. It took over a year of fighting it for him to say I should plead guilty. Since it was a year between the arrest and the conviction, I will have it on my record for 2 more years. I have my license, but can no longer perform a lot of the duties of my job. I am lucky they have made accomodations so I can even keep my job. The DUI scared me for awhile, then I went back to drinking. I went to inpatient detox for 2 days, stayed sober for 6 weeks, then went back to drinking. I'm trying again to detox and quit. The best thing the DUI did for me is make me not take the car ANYWHERE if I've even had 1 drop of alcohol, since after you have an DUI conviction they can pull you over for any reason or no reason at all and test your blood alcohol, and even if it's .0000001 % you are busted again.

Yesterday was 30 days. Thanks for sharing your experience with lawyer, I have a good idea how far I want to push legal issue.
My work also has made accommodations due to my performance

I luckily have found I still enjoy things I used to drink too like sports but now I follow the games better and pay more attention to details.
Also I ironically have gotten out more and explored town since I have not been driving. Just taking bus without destination, exploring town and trying new restaurants.
