Just made it past 1st weekend sober... Harder than I thought

Had to make a surprising number of changes in my plans to stay away from drunk people. Drinking has been such an integral part of my life for so long I can tell it's going to be tough change it. Happily, I have the support of my wife which is great. Unfortunately, my entire family drinks, so for now, I must keep them away until I'm confident that I will not drink around them. They are supportive of my quitting, but it's not fair for them to not drink because I don't. More time sober will help I guess??? Any advice on how to tell your family that you are no longer drinking is helpful. Thx

I hope you end up being an inspiration - a success story - for the rest of your family. Having a supportive spouse is priceless, so hang on to that! Best wishes!

Welcome Gopaddleout. I think you'll find it very helpful to be here where everyone understands. Congratulations on your big decision to quit and make your life better.

I couldn't imagine my life without drinking. It was part of everything for me too. In the end, it was no longer fun - I couldn't trust myself to ever control the amounts I drank. It was so good to be free of it. You're wise to make some changes in your plans until you're feeling stronger and more confident. In the early days we're quite fragile. It all gets better and easier. Glad you found us!

I'd just tell your family you've decided to stop drinking - just like that. If they ask why just tell them that you no longer like what it does to you.

Hi gopaddle

Yeah the first weekends are hard but they get easier - and there's a ton of support here.

If you want to tell your family I think least is right on the money - just give it to them straight...you said they're supportive of you quitting so I don't think you'll have too much drama there?
