Songs that are helping in recovery

This song is really helping me tonight as I am thinking of my alcoholic grandfather who lost his fight with alcohol this year.

What songs are you listening to for inspiration?

If shame had a face I think it
would kind of look like mine
If it had a home would it be my eyes
Would you believe me if I said I'm tired of this?
Well here we go now one more time

I tried to climb your steps
I tried to chase you down
I tried to see how low I could get it down to the ground
I tried to earn my way
I tried to tame this mind
You better believe that I tried to beat this

[CHORUS]
So when will this end it goes on and on
Over and over and over again
Keep spinning around I know that it won't stop
Till I step down from this for good

I never thought I'd end up here
Never thought I'd be standing where I am

I guess I kinda thought it would be easier than this
I guess I was wrong now one more time

I tried to climb your steps
I tried to chase you down
I tried to see how low I could get it down to the ground
I tried to earn my way
I tried to tame this mind
You better believe that I tried to beat this

So when will this end it goes on and on
Over and over and over again
Keep spinning around I know that it won't stop
Till I step down from this for good

[REPEAT CHORUS]
Sick cycle carousel
This is a sick cycle, yeah
Sick cycle carousel
This is a sick cycle, yeah

Gerry Rafferty - Get It Right Next Time

Out on the street I was talkin' to a man
He said there's so much of this life of mine that I don't understand
You shouldn't worry yes that ain't no crime
'Cause if you get it wrong you'll get it right next time, next time

You need direction, yeah you need a name
When you're standing in the crossroads every highway looks the same
After a while you can recognize the signs
So if you get it wrong you'll get it right next time, next time

Life is a liar, yeah life is a cheat
It'll lead you on and pull the ground from underneath your feet
No use complainin', don't you worry, don't you whine
'Cause if you get it wrong you'll get it right next time, next time

You gotta grow, you gotta learn by your mistakes
You gotta die a little everyday just to try to stay awake
When you believe there's no mountain you can climb
And if you get it wrong you'll get it right next time, next time
Next time, hmm

Oh I love me a music thread!!!! In early sobriety I would listen to this song in repeat. It's about a little boy learning to swim, but to me it's about learning to do something that's bigger then you. Something that seems impossible like becoming free of alcohol.
Here's a link with lyrics enjoy

Well the first days are the hardest days, don't you worry any more
When life looks like easy street there is danger at your door.

I like Don't give up, by Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel
The drugs Don't work by the Verve
I also like Hurt by Christina Aguilera. I know it;s about losing someone and not being able to say sorry, but it strikes a chord with me. The way I used to blame everyone for my crap. It still makes me cry if it comes on my car radio. My son thinks I've lost the plot

FIX YOU UP - BY TEGAN & SARA

What do I, what do I, what do I need
To do to see myself in a better mood
And what do you, what do you, what do you need
To do to get yourself in a better mood
Well there's not a lot for you to give if you're giving in
And there's not a lot for you to feel if you're not feeling it
You bring it up and bring it in and we'll get you fixed up in no time
What I wanted most, what I wanted most, what I wanted most
Was to get myself all figured out
And what I figured out, what I figured out, what I figured out
Was that I needed more time to figure you out
There's not a lot for you to give if you're giving in
And there's not a lot for you to feel if you're not feeling it
You bring it up and bring it in and we'll get you fixed up in no time
Cause this love is all I have to give
This love is all I have to give

'far away' by the Levellers

and it will stop
cause there's never been a day that lasts forever
just as the sun sets
it will rise at dawn for ever after
and sorry that it ain't so cool
just living in a world of fools
but that should never stop you because
far away is close at hand,
here in the drifting sand
far away is close at hand
imagination,
every woman and every man

i remember listening to this on a very lonely work trip and wondering how on earth i could ever get to grips with my life. it's happening now, and this song really resonates with me. it's all out there waiting, for all of us.

A corny 80s song.

Night Ranger "Better Let It Go"

Gotta pull me out of this rut I'm in
I've got to see the light
Before it gets too dim
To face it is the only way
To fight and stay ahead
Of the games that we play

I'm the one that's losin' losin' out
I'm the one that's choosin'
And runnin' out

[Chorus:]
You better let it go
All those dreams you thought you could do
You better let it go
All those dreams you wanted to do
You better let it go
Let your dreams unfold
Do what you want
You better let it go
You can let go

Gotta pull away from the way I've been
To stay the same would be a big mistake
To see the truth for what it is
Instead of tellin' myself that's the way it is

[Chorus]

Make no mistake
There's a life to be lived
Make no mistake
There's so much one can give
And all that it takes
Is someone to forgive

[Chorus]

Gotta move me out of this rut I'm in
I've got to see the light
Before it gets too dim

Gotta move away from the way I've been
To stay the same would be a big mistake

You better let it go [repeat/fade]

John Denver 'Sweet Surrender', brilliant lyrics.

Lost and alone on some forgotten highway
Traveled by many, remembered by few
Lookin' for somethin' that I can believe in
Lookin' for somethin' that I'd like to do with my life

There's nothin' behind me and nothin' that ties me
To somethin' that might have been true yesterday
Tomorrow is open, right now it seems to be more
Than enough to just be here today

And I don't know what the future is holdin' in store
I don't know where I'm goin', I'm not sure where I've been
There's a spirit that guides me, a light that shines for me
My life is worth the livin', I don't need to see the end

Sweet, sweet surrender, live, live without care
Like a fish in the water, like a bird in the air
Sweet, sweet surrender, live, live without care
Like a fish in the water, like a bird in the air
