On July 28th, I decided to stop drinking. I drank. Alot. I am 44 and have been drinking regularly (weekends, events etc) since high school. Maybe not daily or weekly but definitely monthly. For the past 7 years, damn near every day.

I thought I had failed miserably over the past 3 months and have been beating myself up. The one thing that I have done is kept a journal. This morning, feeling good about not drinking this week, I looked at the journal in depth.

Of 76 days I have drank 9 days. The 76 days before that, I drank 76 days...and the 76 before that....I drank 76 days...

I have so far to go, but Man, my journey has really started.

Congratulations on not drinking 67 out of the last 76 days! Do you know why you keep picking up after being sober for a little while?

I'm also 44 and drinking took over my life for more than a decade.

For me, this sounds like terribly difficult work. I've been sober a few times and it's always the first few days that are the worst. You're forcing yourself to keep going through the worst part again and again. I know for me that there's no guarantee of coming back from the next drunk. It could be the one that creates a health problem, like cirrhosis, that is not reversible.
