A little back of the envelope calculation...
I'm five days sober, which means I'm finally feeling brave enough to look at the state of my finances. Yikes. Things are not pretty, people.
$400. That's a fairly conservative guesstimate of what I spend on booze in a month, looking over my last statement. Let's calculate a few things from that.
$400 = ~ $13/day. My poison was usually a certain beer that was $7.99 a sixer, so $1.33 a beer, so an average of 9.7 beers a day. Yeah, that sounds just about exactly right--the first sixer is never enough, but I never would make it all the way through the second without passing out.
To take it a step further into the realm of personal vanity: the calories in that particular beer = ~ 190 per bottle. So 1,843 extra calories a day, or 12,901 extra calories a week (mostly at night, right before bed), which equals about 3.7 pounds a week, or about sixteen pounds a month. Yeah, that sounds about right, too.
Crikey. A person can do a lot with $400 extra dollars in her pocket every month ($4,800 a year!), and sixteen fewer pounds on her hips (that's about a dress size, on my frame.)
Drinking is pure insanity for so many reasons, but for me it's helpful to write out stark numbers like this to see in black and white just how insane it truly is.

Wow thank you for that! I'm two days sober. I got you way beat (not this this a contest to win!). I never really thought about the Visa bill at the end of the month. I preferred wine and rum I figure $961.70/month for 2 bottles of wine per day + 2 bottles of rum per week. Grand total of... are you ready for this?... $11,540/year. Depressing! I won't even begin to calculate the calories....

It is unreal how much money you spend when drinking. Not only for the nightly booze but for us it was gambling and drinking! A waste but the past is the past and look forward to maybe saving to buy a house.
I was easily spending $100AUD a night (thats similar to 100USD) up to four times a week.
2 x 6packs of bourbon & coke premixes - $50
2 x packs cigarettes - $40
1 x bottle wine - $15
+ random craft beers that would run to $10 a bottle
Some of you may freak at those prices, but here in Oz the taxman take a hefty chunk of exise from liqor and tobacco, up to 70% of the value is tax.
Oh, and not to mention gambling, that could run to $1000 in a session while drunk.

Dopey ain't it? To waste so much money, time and effort, so many lies and such deceit, friendships closed off to stick with our best buddy bottle, or sitting in a stupor sucking weed instead of living
Oh yes, and we' re the intelligent life form on this planet!!!
