Hello! I'm a newbie to sober recovery!
I have had a drinking problem on and off since 2000 when I was involved
in an on the job car wreck (I was the unwilling passenger). Over the next 4 years (I had to wait to get basic retirement) I developed severe osteoarthritis
in my knees and right hip. I retired on disability March 1, 2004. When the osteo-arthritis started flaring up, I started self medicating with a liter of tequila a night. It helped with the pain but I was still working in law enforcement. I always felt sober the next morning and made my 50 mile trek to work everyday.
I got wrote up once for not coming to work. I had drank a half gallon of vodka
the night before. When my boss called the next morning I could barely talk. He knew I was having pain issues from the wreck and I got off with a warning. About a week before I retired, I got up an hour earlier and traveled to the office. My boss had arrived early also. He walked up to greet me and suddenly yelled an expletive and asked what I had gotten into that I smelled like a brewery. He got the alco-sensor and handed it to me. I blew into it and stopped it at .20. I was stunned. I told him the other officers would smell me and I better go back home. I have been taking 8mg of Xanax a day
since 1998. I don't get DT's or hangovers. In 2005 I had a total left knee replacement and a right hip replacement. I started going to a pain clinic and
was put on Lorcet and Morphine sulfate. So now I am a pill head lol. Strangely
I quit drinking. I found out opiates hit the same receptors in the brain alcohol
does. I self detoxed off the pain meds after a year. I did not drink much at all. In 2009 I had my right knee replaced. The therapy and pain was exacerbated by my having a drop foot. I had an ATV accident in 1986 and
was in the hospital for 33 days. I had fractured my hip socket and had 3 steel pins put in my right hip. It was back to the pain clinic again for 3 years.
I tapered off the pain meds again. It was a hellish experience with a lot of sleepless nights and those awful hot flashes. This past summer my drinking picked up to a liter of vodka every other day. I have since expanded that to
every 5-7 days. I had my liver checked a couple of years ago and it was in good shape. I have been to plenty of AA meetings. I am attempting to regain
sobriety. Please pray for me.
