First time posting.
Hello group,
My name is Kevin. I've recently completed a 90 day program, my first, but have since drank again. I'm 48 yo. today. On Monday, Jan. 7th I start school full time.
I'm nervous and skeptical about my ability to perform and comprehend my classes as I'm once again new in sobriety and fighting the usual demons and all their attendant suffering.
Anyway, just introducing myself and saying hello.
Kevin.

Welcome to SR Kevin
Were you getting some outpatient care too? Have you stopped drinking again yet?
I always found that some new venture or anything remotely scary was enough to keep me drinking. Thing is when I quit I had to do quite a few scary things without drink anyway. I took time out of a lot of things to get sober but there were still things I had to do. There's never a perfect stress free time to quit. But it is possible whatever the circumstances.
I'm sure you'll find the support here helps too x

Welcome and Happy Birthday!
Starting school full time is challenging. Stopping drinking is also challenging. Do you feel up to both, at the same time? We understand how difficult it is to stop drinking.

Thanks for the responses.
Kim, I have a window of opportunity to go back to school. It's a new program through the VA that Obama signed last year. VRAP, Veterans Retraining Assistance Program. Only 99,000 will be eligible as it's first come first served for vets. 35-59. It's 12 months of benefits while you attend a VA approved school full time and have until March 31, '14 to use it. So, it's now or lose the benefits.

Hi Mate,
Sounds like far to big an opportunity to blow to me. Stay sober and go to class. I think you'll find that the need for concentration and attention will be great for your sobriety and that academically you'll surprise yourself.....as long as you stay off the sauce. Grab it by the throat and go for it.

Hi Kevin
Welcome. I also have gone back to school full-time recently. I am 37 and it has been a challenge but also lots of fun and very intellectually stimulating and rewarding. I found when I was concentrating on my studies it was easier to not drink so much. I have only recently realized I am actually an alcoholic so I wasn't really trying to quit before this semester. But I do know that I get so much more out of my classes and do better when I am not drinking. Its much easier to concentrate and be motivated in sobriety.
Good luck and keep reading and posting

I'm 36 and I've been going to school for the past 2 years. The rare days that I was sober were definitely way more productive. It's pretty upsetting to spend an evening preparing for the test with your drink of choice, and then barely remembering what you've read the next day.
School might be stressful, but it's also something to keep you (and your mind) really busy, and something to give you a manageable goal to work on.

Hi Kevin,
I know you're nervous, but I am excited for you. Two great opportunities for you! Change can be scary, but thrilling too if you choose to see it that way. I agree with Deluxe!!

Kevin,
I work in a school setting, and return to school tomorrow. I'll be getting things together for my lunches and making sure my laundry is done. Maybe those simple things would be a god diversion from drinking tonight....since it's your first day of school tomorrow
Don't give up on yourself , or let this opportunity slip away. Let us know how you're doing.
