Wet brain

I had never heard of this before I just googled it.

It sounds horrible. Is it common? Does anyone have any experience of it?

Another reason to quit (not that I actually need one)

I know what the medical name is for it but can't spell it. Corsikoffs. I've worked with people with it. Some go from being extremely lucid to completely gone. And some just stay in a constant wet brain state. It.'s horrible. And there's no cure yet.

I've seen it and it is not pretty.

It's not common yet not uncommon.

Do you go to AA meetings bunny? Most of the oldtimers are familiar with it.

Wet brain for an alcoholic is like incarceration, insanity and death. Alcohol leads to one or more ....

All the best.

Its Korsakoff's syndrom..

I was diagosed with it two feburary's ago... I woke up in the ICU and been told that.

What it is , is a lack of thiamine for a long time. Which is very common for alcoholics to do..
So some recover early with treatment (like me, thank god). And some stay in that state of confusion..

Its basically alcohol deminsia..

You dont need to go through it like I did and , like those said..

AA saved this alcoholic from that life..

The bartender/owner of the bar I used to frequent went wet brain. It happened fairly quickly for him and from what I understand there's no coming back.

Another lady I know suffered from a milder case, it's made her life very difficult but she doesn't drink at all and hasn't had to be confined to an institution, where almost all with that condition wind up. Of course that would change should she drink again.

The father of a friend was badly brain damaged by his drinking but his wife set up a hospital bed for him in the living room and keeps him changed and rolls him often enough. Occasionally she finds that he's got up and walked a few feet, remaining there until she discovers him.

No hard pattern to it regarding amounts and frequency that I know of, some drink their way there quickly, others slowly.

I think it's actually a very misunderstood illness. I worked with a person who had it very closely for a couple of weeks and sometimes she was fine, having a laugh, telling you about her day. And the next minute she was calling you by a different name and asking really random questions. It was so sad to watch someone sobering up but still having that to deal with at the same time.

:ghug3 Thank God you will never have to go through that again and thank God he saved you from that life! Thanks for sharing Inda.

I have a family member that died from wet brain recently. He started to get symptoms long ago. Was treated and cured after thiamine treatments & with the reliance that he did not drink again he was told he would be OK. He stayed sober for 10 years. Then picked up again after that and died shortly after. Wet brain was indicated as the cause of death.... makes me sad thinking about it.
