Alternative to AA

I am eager to see what RR has to offer. As an Atheist and Existentialist, AA insults me in a way I can't get over.
I am the only one that can put the bottle down.
I have been a completely functional alcy for 35 years until a couple years ago.
Now I have lost my kids (15 and 17) lost my job, lost my Girlfriend - and I am looking at foreclosure. Sounds familiar I'm sure.
Just acquired my second DWI in 7 years (wasn't even driving) and have nary away to pay the revocation fee. The money of the family (my dad) is practicing tough love.

So there is my sob story Looking forward to your support.

Steve W.

How did you get a DWI if you weren't driving?

I used to be largely atheist and existentialist. Now I am a believer of sorts.

A.A wasn't my cup of tea.....too much smoke and coffee;though I'm not knocking it.

Spent 17 months on an atheist forum; it worked the other way.
Don't get angry, it might not be as silly as you think.
Old Neitzsche was a smart cookie, but look how he ended up.

You can get a DUI if you are sitting in a car, inebriated.
My brother's friend got done after sleeping in his car because he was too drunk to drive.
The assumption is, that you wake up, think you are ok and drive off, still way over the limit.

Welcome Woodsen.
We promise not to try and convert you.
We will however, tell the truth.

I understand AA might rub an atheist the wrong way.

That being said, where else do you plan on going to meet other sober people? Because I've always found hanging around sober people helps me stay sober myself.

RR drove me to AA too... But that's not to say anything for what you'll find Steve. I will remain an atheist in AA but I know how much of a hurdle some of that stuff can be. Rational Recovery is wonderful and without it I wouldn't be sober but it I found I related to AA better. Might be worth checking out SMART recovery too if you haven't already x

Welcome to SR Steve
Our members use a variety of methods here, so you'll fit in well.

You might like to also check out our Secular Connections forum...you'll find a lot of RR discussion there

That's hilarious. I'm agnostic, but my Southern Baptist upbringing has served me well. I know how to treat people right and stay out of trouble. Well, not completely, but more than many.

That was my experience as well. I can't remember if it was Smart Recovery or Rational recovery, but I found the experience dry and intellectual. The HP thing of AA doesn't sit well with me, but the people are warm and genuine and will go the extra mile for you.

I've called the AA hotline when I've exhausted every other hotline and warm line, and thought, 'oh Jeez, I'm gonna get a lecture,' but no. I got a genuine warm person.
