Well THAT was a kick in the head!

I "quit" drinking about a month ago, but admittedly have given in to the temptation of beer a few times between now and then... Coincidentally, I visited my doctor a couple of days after my "quit" date for a regular check-up (which included blood work)...

Yesterday I finally got around to seeing him to discuss the lab results. In addition to my elevated liver enzymes (I expected that), my triglicerides were through the roof! One of the "highest scores" the Doc said he has recently seen! Apparently anything over 500 puts you into the "extremely high risk" category, and my score was 546...

And guess what the number one cause is for high triglicerides? That's right, alcohol... So in addition to having to pop pills to control my high blood pressure (alcohol related), I'm now having to pop pills for the triglicerides (alcohol related). At 39 I feel like I am to damn young to be a pill popper...

So yes, yesterday is now my "official" quit date. Alcohol is killing me (literally)...

Hi Jack,
I also had high blood pressure and high cholesterol caused by excessive drinking, adnd was taking pills for both of them for the past few years. I also had 2 occurrences of atrial fibrillation over the past 2 years, where my heart rhythm went out of whack. This too was caused by excessive alcohol use.

Well, I quit drinking on 8/1/12 (today is my Sober day #101!!!). I had a checkup with my doctor this week, and my cholesterol and blood pressure are WAY DOWN! He took me OFF the cholesterol med immediately, and cut my blood pressure med in half. We'll take another look in 6 months, and if all is well then, we'll stop the blood pressure med also!

So, the point is, your health will improve drastically once you quit drinking completely. I wish you the best!

Johnny

I'm glad you talked to your dr so you know what's going on. I hope this gives you the motivation to stop drinking for good.

Sometimes I think some of us need that short sharp shock FMG.
It can really make the scales fall from our eyes.

I'm glad you saw your Dr and glad this can be treated
