Telling friends I'm trying to be sober
I just say I am taking a break from it. The real people won't dwell on it, they accept your decision and that's it.
Not too long ago I went to a biker bar with my buddy and asked for a seltzer.
The whole bar laughed at me. It was hilarious!

You are saving your life. Friends will be supportive and stay drinking buddies will disappear. It usually seems that the drinking buddies with a drinking problem will become angry because by you quiting it forces them to look in the mirror.
What ever happens you are making a very wise choice. You have to take care of you.

I just blew off a drink outing with friends last night to go to a movie by myself. The old me never would have made that choice, but bottom line? Here I am still sober the next morning.
With each choice you make you have to ask yourself, is this person/place/situation going to bring me closer to my recovery goals? Or is it going to make it more difficult for me?
