Welcome to SR r3laychris....You made a good start by coming here. It's a great site for support. Is it possible for you to see a doctor before quitting?...It would make the whole process easier and safer.

Welcome r3laychris!

I think everyone has a fear of quitting at first - I know I did. (Now I wish I'd gotten sober sooner!) If withdrawal has you worried, it's always best to see a doctor...... it's really the only way to know for sure you're OK to detox on your own or need medical help.

I'm glad you're here - this is a great place! It's been my anchor, especially during those first days. Keep reading and posting!:day6

Five drinks a day? I take it you go all day without drinking and just get drunk in the evenings, then? If that's the case, most likely you'll just feel some anxiety come your normal evening drinking time.

Thank you all for the welcoming~!

@Terminally Unique -> Yeah, i don't drink all day.. Probably start drinking around 7pm.

@Sapling -> Last time i tried a doctor he wanted to fill me up with muscle relaxers etc. to get over it. And truthfully i don't want to go from one bad thing, to an even worst thing.

I wouldn't either. But I had to do a medically supervised detox.....I also drank about 5 times the amount you do and my life was at risk. Detox is different for different people....No matter what amount you drink..Just be careful with it...You get squrrily and feel it's not going right...Don't be afraid to dial 911. You may feel nothing at all...I couldn't take that chance on finding out.

r3,
I did a seven day in hospital detox, and they have those everywhere. The danger of seizure is the thing that has happened to alcoholics and other using other substances that they quit suddenly. Tapering off just does not work for alcoholism, as all of us tried it.

r3, you are making reasons to keep drinking. Conditions. We see that here all the time too. Folks won't go and tel their doc, are afraid someone will find out so won't go to meetings, counselors, shrinks whatever resources they may have at their disposal.

Then there are the other conditions such as as long as nothing goes wrong sober, or I can party, or I can't be sober and have fun.

I am not being critical here at all. I am taking your comment that you are here to quit drinking seriously. See we have a lot of folks that have done that very thing. For all of us, it only could proceed once we were willing to do whatever it took to make it according to our individual abilities.

In other words once we were willing to do whatever it takes. I felt the same way about taking any drugs thus the in hospital where they take me up taper me off and let me out detoxed and healthier than I went in. Few actually do that though by choice, although lots do rehab programs. As well many stay here on SR only and manage to make it.

How you do it is less important than that you do it, today, because tomorrow never comes. First step you have taken, you came here. Next is making a recovery plan. You have already involved your doc and that is more than many will do. You need to pick your program or programs as I did many at once, AA, Here, in hospital, counseling, and family and friends support too. Most were in denial and said you don't have that kind of problem you just need to cut down is all, and those were my family of non alcoholics and non drinkers saying that!

If you really want to quit, and are willing to do whatever it takes after some research here then you came to the right place.

Seeing a Doctor about quitting is the best way to go but you can detox on your own if you want to. Being scared about quitting is normal but you will not miss it after your body is normal again. The only problem is the urges and triggers you will have when you stop drinking.

Good luck and welcome to SR.

I recovered in the fellowship of AA. The folks at your local group will be able to help you.

All the best.

Hi r3 and welcome, I got meds from my doc and done a 5 day home detox, did not feel rite or start to sleep for about 2 weeks but was all expected. As all the others here say you need a plan to follow detox up, I tried AA although they fantastic bunch of people it did not just click wit me but I do use some of their ideas which I think are great. SR has been my rock, so much to read on here it has really saved me a few times, I also heard about AVRT on here, got the book and reading it which I'm finding helpful also. 79 days today longest I've been sober since I started drinking 20 odd yrs ago, 90 is my big goal and I'm confidant I will make it, weeks 5 to 9 was tough but thank God it is getting a bit easier.
Good luck and let us know how you go

Hi and welcome r3laychris

If you're at all worried about detox, please see your Dr - go to a different one if you need to, preferably one who is well versed in alcohol and addiction matters.

Detox can sometimes be tricky for some of us and it's simply best to be safe. Noone here knows for certain what you'll experience.

I wish I'd seen a Dr.

I drank for many years - I ended up drinking all day everyday.

It's scary I know, but it is possible to leave that life behind - I know you'll find a lot of support here

Welcome R3 --

Itchy kind of hit it on the nose for you. I'd see a doctor and be up front with them that you don't want to be put on any meds that you could potentially abuse.

Keep posting and reading here, this is a great place to learn.
